So, I have an R18 first edition. Within 100 miles of purchase the left piston starting blowing oil. Had an amazingly hard time with BMW on it. Clutch line leaked from the factory… took them a month to fix it. Overall, I was incredibly displeased with the manufacture QC on the R18...
I just got the commander 3s on my R18… yep BMW has a radial/Bias mix for the R18. Whatever works :-) I do like the new Michelin commander IIIs and I liked the Michelin Commanders on the bike originally
I almost went to work for The Motor Company as management; who knows ? :-) Will I have to get thug Dyna back (I traded it for my R18 because my GS was essentially worthless :-)) It’s a shame their market keeps shrinking; I do love them.
New tires, service bulletin on shaft spline lubrication, air cleaner (was feeling lazy), reverse recall complete, valves and spark plugs, brakes flushed.
They didn‘t tell me; when there is a service advisory out they just do it. Beware the BMW final drives; if it all isn’t perfect it does bad things. Clutch and drive shaft spline lubes were always part of the airhead regimen of fair. In this case there were incidences where it wasn’t done...
So, I dont get a lot of BMW service… every couple of years because it needs things I don‘t feel like getting a special jack for. Here are some notes:
I like New Tire day
There is a maintenance notice out for getting driveshaft splines lubed. As an old BMW guy trust me, when you can get this...
I do a lot of my own maintenance but for brake flushing I take it to the dealer. The modern abs systems can be tricky, to do it well you need tools like a mighty vac or speed bleeders… and brake fluid is caustic. It’s just like bleeding any brake system if you choose to do it but unlike a...
Any good affordable AGM battery works. I would go cheap; I am a bike battery killer :-) I am shocked my original battery still works on my bike. 4 years is good for a bike battery where I live. Even on a tender they tend to go quick.
My clutch cable started leaking when I bought the bike. I will bet you dollars to donuts your cable is leaking somewhere. It’s mineral oil so you can have a leak and maybe not have seen it. Fill it as instructed above. And then find the leak. It’s only mineral oil so you dont have to...
Just keep in mind, boxers like revs. They like to be run at higher RPM and it’s good for their longevity. I’ve used my 6th gear about three times on this bike. As you’ve noticed the R18 has no problems with loping along at 85. Interesting though… at 3200 in 6th gear thats about 100 mph...
Well, thats the thing. For example, I’ve had every iteration of the GS, From the R80 up. Plain and simple, my R18 had some manufacturing defects and they were not prepared for, nor did they seem to care, about them. As long as your bike is OK they are great with taking my money. Things...
I have the waxed cotton saddlebags and like the look of the big “passenger” tailbag. I have a really nice old school wunderlich luggage rack for the tail
So, my clutch cable was defective from the factory. Started leaking a week after buying the bike. Combine this with my engine came with a poorly assembled left piston assembly, I was mighty displeased. But the clutch breaking? Thats a big ole honkin old school BMW dry clutch… I don’t...
Darn it, I forgot I wanted the waxed canvas tail bag for my R18. The fix is in and I never had my reverse disabled. I need new tires a brake bleeding and a valve adjustment so they are replacing the reverse gear wiring and all that other stuff in a couple of weeks. If I would have just...
