Ohhh, I can help. They poorly crimped the clutch lines on the R18s. After my engine problems, my bike started leaking clutch line fluid. I dont think its under the tank but the crap goes everywhere, it's right at the handlebar. They replaced the clutch line after waiting a month for the...
I am more relaxed in my riding today and just have the R18. My past BMWs include:
2 R75/6s. One was a sidecar rig
R1150Rck… the Rockster Orange/black
R80GS Paris Dakar
R100GS Paris Dakar
R1150GSA
R1200GS
Oh and another R75/6 :).
My first road bike was a BMW R60/2
It is the end of an era...
I can bet ya the ten dollars you really won't save at BMW that it is BMW North America :). The Germans are generous to a fault at Motorrad Germany because they stubbornly protect their founding brand, at all costs. It's not that way now, but in the 80's they were literally "We don't care how...
OK... no motorcycle comes with a comfy stock seat, so for once BMW put a cool looking seat on their heritage bike and said "just buy another seat." :-)
The stock seat caused me some genuine discomofort. So I bought the weekender. It softened the ride and didnt muck with the aesthetics too...
You can forget help from BMW NA. They have become a black hole whose mission is to bury your issue. I went round and round with them for a year on a defective engine. Imagine how little they care about your key.
The R1200 c is one of many missteps any manufacturer takes. It was underpowered, had awful chrome, tried to be retro with a telelever front end… I have a long long list of why the R1200c was a hideous flop
The R18, aesthetically, is flawless and has a torque curve that could scare anyone at...
I sold my BMW R80 Paris Dakar. I acquired the bike in Germany and replaced it with the R100 Paris Dakar. Id still like the R80 around as a true dual sport. BMW has fallen too far from the mark with the GS and its more a sport tourer. That R80 could climb trees :-)
Sills BMW in Cleveland does my valve checks for $140. I have finally drawn the line. Gave checks on the bike are easy but I dont want to buy a special lift to turn the rear wheel to find TDC.
Just keep in mind amazon can get you the exact oil from Germany in different jugs at $44 for 4 liters and there is no way on gods green earth I would pay over $100 for their gear oil. I cant verify it but I have no doubt same spec gear oil is a fraction of the price and superior (full synth)...
OK, I bought my FE R18 because it looks like an old BMW but has modern safety and performance. The bike is gorgeous and there is no way, no how I would want some of the latter models because they gave that up and went for the cruiser and cruiser touring markets after the R18 in a bare bones...
Just a gentle wash. A microfiber cloth just ensuring you touch every bit, the foam does the lions share of removing both surface and subsurface grime. It was the first time the bike saw water for washing and it was just spotless when it was done
Foam cannons rock, and forget just bikes. You rig it to your power washer and it works on the low setting like a cannon. It coats the entire vehicle of your choice in 2 inches of thick white modern foam surfacant. I can wash my lifted mega wrangler after off road driving cloth top body...
I have only used water once on my R18. for the first year I kept the bike spotless with S100 spray (BMW, Honda, whatever... :-) Waterless is a nice way to keep the whole bike polished. One of the cool parts of the R18 is the entire bike surface can be cleaned spotlessly, inside and out...
Yup, just checked, these are waxed canvas, do not wash them with soap. Like I said mine are waterproof. But so is my Barbour :-). It smells not so nice but it is waterproof :-)
