    Kindergarten Oil question

The bike has a dry clutch, so no worries there. I do use a specific JASO2 15w50 just sos during warranty noone can peep about it. I get mine from liquimoly in Germany via amazon.

    Bags for R18FE

Hmmmm... mine are waterproof and I like them. they come with waterproof stuff sacks as well. Like all things on my FE I want some authenticity the cloth bags are it. shampoo them gently (I bet downright washing them is a bad idea and may destroy the waterproofing. they expand and fit quite...

    Cost of first service

which is why any of the good 75-80 weight gear lubes should do the trick. All I really know is a dealer wants $140 dollars for enough gear oil to do a transmission and a final drive :-0. I took a pass.

    Cost of first service

sorry dave, bought mine for the GS like a 100 years ago. google BMW Bob. or bob's BMW. one f those flagship dealers everybody loves. let me run out and make sure it fits again. Yup, I bought it for my 08 GS and just like the oil filter wrench it fits perfect

    Cost of first service

Well, it is in the manual... I think its a 70/80 GL3. I used Porsche 70/80 GL3, it was super cheap (actually free). im sure you could use the common 75/90 full synth but until my warranty is over I always use the exact same spec fluids. Chrysler sells the EXACT spec fluid at half the price...

    R12 Rumors - Yes please!

I'm never a wet blanket... but The R12 was a neat bike... but it was not old school in any way, the engine was too high and the front suspension and and and... I like the bike (they made a few in black with pinstripes but it didnt even come close to catching my eye. I bought a GS in the same...

    R18 vs R18 Classic

Man, I couldn't agree more. I rode my FE 5,000 miles before changing a darn thing on it. Just ride it like you stole it and change the oil.

If it was BMW of Cleveland get ready... they will mug you like a thief in the night for 6k service. Trust me.... get an appointment at Sills now for 6k
  9. Mr. Efficiency

    Cost of first service

Using official BMW fluids and parts, I can see $1000 being a reasonable price from a dealer for 6k or 12 k service. Its labor intensive

    Cost of first service

Rather than create a new thread, I decided to make some notes here on the 6 and 12,000 mile services. Air Cleaner; I love the sleek engine cases but the cases and the air cleaner are both difficult to remove. It is a one hour plus job and you are going to need some special long torx and hex...

    R18 vs R18 Classic

I have the cloth waterproof BMW messenger bags, as well as a 1950s style luggage rack from wunderlich. We can talk about windshield vs. no windshield. At speeds under 80, I don't miss a windshield for any ride. earplugs and a good, and I mean good helmet with a chin dam will make you...

    R18 vs R18 Classic

I make it no secret that I am very very fond of my R18 First edition and I am not so fond of its follow ups. A retro bike should be, well retro :-). I love it in every way and have a good luggage system I can use anytime I want and a suitable windshield (although you would need to twist my...

Is limited lean angle posing a safety risk?

limited what? :) Now I have a long torso, so there is a lot I can do with lean angle, but knowing how to ride your motorcycle I guess is a safety issue. I scraped my footpegs twice on my test ride (and it was a 200 mile test ride) and haven't scraped them again. and I will tell you, even...

    Cost of first service

Generic oils and a chrysler gear oil... both available from Amazon at much much much cheaper prices. I got liqui moly from Germany for 40 bucks for 4 liters (and I betcha its what is in the BMW jugs) and has the exact same lettter mumbo jumbo as the BMW oil and the gear oil is free :) Secret...

Is it possible to reset service warning

An add here: if you are past your service date, make sure to move your menu with the toggle switch from the warning or it will not reset. I had some bluetooth issues with the $50 android tablet I had to buy to run motoscan but with all in $125 to have a tool as good as the GS-911 with a nice...

    Who likes ‘fish’…exhaust :)

I do not like the fishtails but facts are facts; you cannot do a redux of Art Deco German motorcycles without them. It just works and I like them as part of BMW really creating a retro bike. They have to be there

    Rear Footpeg Delete Plugs

I ordered the plugs and got them from a BMW car dealer, they gave them to me for free and they look perfect

    Honda Goldwing

OK; I will be more controversial. The transcontinental is a big bloated bagger and I wouldn't want one for free. I love the R18 as a pure retro bike and I can ride it the same as a TC. I'm just not a fan. I wouldn't want a Harley touring bike if they were free; it is a big bloated bagger...
