Installing foot pegs on a Classic with floorboards

I’ve only had my Classic for a month and I love it. It came with floorboard which are comfortable and I like the heel and toe shifting. However, I’m struggling with the floorboards a bit. A big part of it is that I have an old back injury which reduces my range of motion in my legs, especially in my hips.

I find I have to push my feet out from the floorboard to the sides instead of simply putting them down with foot pegs. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal until sat on an R18 with foot pegs at the dealer today. It was a lot easier to get my feet on the ground with the foot pegs and I like that your feet can go right up against the foot pegs when you are standing which makes your legs and hips straighter which to me results in less pain and awkwardness. This is especially true if I have to get my feet down quickly which is important if you are wrestling an 800lb bike.

If you’ve changed your floorboards to foot pegs how did you do it? I never had foot pegs on the bike originally so I can’t reverse the process. It appears there are different mounting plates for the foot pegs so if I want the OEM ones it’s not straightforward. Also I asked at the dealership and there is no canned foot peg kit available for purchase and the individual parts are the cost of a small moped.

Thanks,

Tom

It has been over 35 years since I have had a bike with foot pegs, maybe longer.I will say,I was disappointed my R18C came without the floor boards.I was thinking on buying the the complete set up.Funny, after putting a few thousand miles on her,I like them quite a bit.I would like to ride a R18 with the boards but my budget and other motorcycles are keeping me in check:)
Good luck with your project.

I thought all R18 Classics came with floorboards and initially they didn’t include them due to supply but they made them available later? I didn’t get mine until August so maybe I’m wrong?

My Classic has pegs, and I'd love to have boards. I'll bet we could work out a way to do a swap. . . . . . . . I'd pay a fair difference if we could get it worked out. I'll send a message.

I communicated with Stormy separately. For now I decided to keep the floorboards after I took a multi-hour ride today. Here’s why…

I have been working fairly hard the last few days on stretching. It made a huge difference in a positive way. My back will probably always be messed up but I figured taking things into my own hands might help and it did. I wanted to share a website that shows some great stretches for your hips which is https://gmb.io/hip-mobility/ . If you’re having problems with the seating position, hip and/or back pain give them a try. After 28 years since I hurt myself and limited doctor involvement I also decided to make an appointment with a back specialist so I know what’s going on and the best ways to deal with it. Hopefully you find this information helpful.

Thanks,

Tom

Let me know please

Hi Ken. I'm slowly getting used to them and I think I'm going to keep them but if I change my mind it's good to know I have options. I appreciate the offer!

Changed out the floorboards for footpegs on my 22 R18TCFE, could not get 2022 R18B footpegs, was able to use 2021 R18 footpegs complete with mounts, but pegs are rotated back a couple of degrees, kickstand stop did not line up, required rigging up a bumper, had to space out the rear brake reservoir. So it's serviceable for the interim and I really do prefer the pegs, rides like my 21 R18FE now. My dealer is watching for part numbers to order but in meantime am on the lookout for any 'extra' 2022 R18B footpegs.

Update: I have since located the 2022 R18 B footpegs, which mount to the same base as the original floorboards did. So changed the mounts back to the original 2022 mounts, the new footpegs are a bit broader than the 2021 models and a significant flat section on top. They allow for toe shifting which is something i prefer as it's intuitive when on different bikes. I will now be watching to see if Wunderlich creates their lowered floorboards for the 2022 TC.

Note cyclewerks in barrington il ordered the pegs for me, arrived within a few weeks. i picked up a 719 seat from them on ebay too, very knowledgeable all BMW/R18

If the removed footboards need a new home, shoot me a PM.

Do you know what the part number was? My dealer couldn't look up the foot peg but I knew they existed. I'm looking to get those exact pegs for my TC!
