Safe way to order used items

So refresh my old mind. If I find something used that looks like a good deal, say on facebook. Is there a safe way to pay for it and not lose my money if item is not sent else not what the seller said it would be? Was thinking maybe PayPal offers that protection…will go read their fine print. If them or you use other process to ensure you are not buried buying used items please share.
