Question RSD cover conversion, sort of…

What are the chances of successfully converting the black set to a machined look by removing the paint? I’m considering using a Dremel.

A dremel would be difficult - maybe using a disc sander with a fine disc. Do you have a small machine shop nearby? You could take the picture with you of the machined cover and ask them if they could mill off the ribs on the cover. I have a mill and a lathe in my garage I'd be hesitant to try this.

Agree a Dremel would be difficult. I have a Cavera Air CNC milling machine and would take some work but it would be possible.

I have a small vibrating hand held sander on order from a kick starter campaign that would be a great option for this. The campaign has ended and I am waiting for mine to ship. Hopefully soon.

I could just keep it black, but I wanted it to match the other RS stuff. Knowing me, it will bother me until it matches.

+1. As above, if you really want to have a go, micro hand file with lots of patience. It would need a delicate touch because these are very visible and easily ruined.

Probably a wise choice. These RSD peaces seem to have been made some time ago and the coating will have hardened now. Even a good milling machine would have a chance of chipping the paint on the edges. I was thinking about using a flat diamond file really carefully, but that would be a very slow process and the chance of matching the finish around the BMW badge would be very difficult.

I have the machined covers for the cylinders and front engine cover with the two-tone covers on my reservoir and I actually like the look--they don't seem mismatched all to me as they are all the same black and white colors. Personally, I would put them on and see if you just get used to it over time, nobody else will notice it I'm sure...

I think the first edition still has plenty of chrome on it.
