R18 Louvered Performance Plates

For my simple brain there are 2 things at odds here..... one is adding air or removing heat.... sort of at odds with each other.

So... ducts forward or ducts facing the rear.... if my plan works I can try both directions by swapping them from side to side with a 180 rotation thrown in. I expect the outcome is.... that my execution of said "bright idea" will be shit and I'll never report back on it.

Nice work! Did you think it made any difference in performance terms? I'm convinced it does but its very subtle on my stock air filter and exhaust systems. Subtle but noticable difference in Rock and no differences in Roll or Rain.

I put it on when I got home from work, so I haven’t ridden yet. I’m going to on Sunday for about 4-5 hours.

I have drilled the holes into the other plate but haven’t finished it. On this plate, I drilled holes then connected them with the dremel attachment, filed it smooth, then powder coated. I wanted to see what this one looked like (I love the look) and therefore, I have the custom engraved one on the other side still.
I’m considering drilling holes in the custom plate, but I’ve also realised that if I got it powder coated gloss black, you wouldn’t be able to read anything… there’s my dilemma as I like the look of it. I’ll speak to the engraver and see what he says.
I’ll report back if I’ve noticed anything on Sunday night.IMG_5666.jpeg

@Gr8adv - wait a minute.. did you actually drill out all of those holes within the engine cover, or is that an AI generated image..?

I actually like the way it looks... I'm not sure about drilling holes in the lower half of the engine case though..

Yes I drilled the lower case. The problem is the hot engine oil heating the air. Instead of just cooling the air (albeit a great idea) I also cooled the oil. Based on temperature probes, In theory with this set up, if you could go fast enough, you can eliminate the need for an oil cooler. ( not recommended)

I got two fans for the week from a friend who works at the aeronautical department at the university of Washington. The can blow 85 mph. I added smoke to the side fan for observational purposes only.

The red line on the Dyno ( it takes a snapshot of the final run) shows the increase in torque.

The drilling was faster than I thought. If you bring your bike to Seattle I can do it for say $250-$300 per side? Just trying to keep it reasonable for forum members.

Fwiw.... I bought a set of the "horns"..... thinking to mount them facing rearward.... I expect to play with them for 2-4 hours, scratch my head, then put them on the shelf to death we do part.

Other ideas for them are back scratchers, ear plugs holders, use on helmet for Viking day rides etc.

Possibly, with them mounted backwards, powered via the venturie effect, at a certain speed and air density, they will sing like mermaids from jagged rocks while an old sailing ship passed. If so, I'll attempt to re-tune them to the 20 virgins at the end of my bed channel. Off course, I may just be dreaming.

It might be easier if forum members mailed you the two upper pieces to be drilled out..??

Now powder coat the top engine covers black for visual effects. That is one incredible looking machine. With the holes, we need better pics please.

That's a super looking R18! The copper and black are a great look. Just out of interest, why is the big ass fan on the side rather that in front of the bike? Does it make any difference where its placed when you run these tests? Was this a "before" test to get a dyno baseline (I was looking to see what the whole bike looked like in terms of visuals with the cases drilled)?
