Fat tire (not the beer)

I’m looking at the company’s listed above- They are pricy
Essentially I’m looking for the outer rims- aluminum, powder coated 21”x3.5 front and 18”x5.5” or 6” rear. 2 sets of spokes and nipples and the quotes are coming around $3500 cad. 💸 plus shipping the original hubs over. 💸💸
I’m not necessarily cheap (or miser) however I can’t justify that expense. So the search continues

hmm I agree. Thats why I asked. I dont mind spending some money on the exhaust and air suspension but the wheels are beautiful to me as they are too.... sooo tough call to make.

Yes those are the prices. You don't necessarily have to ship your hubs over there. You can order the parts and have it built in the USA too. Where are you located?

I did the build (lacing, trueing, sealing ) of the wheels myself.
#shamelessPlug

Ummm please continue inserting shameless plugs.
If this is something you have done successfully and are able to source the parts required- I’m interested

For me the stock wheels are not proportional to the dimensions of the r18. I think the 21/18 combo just completes the bike.
I got a quote for the roctane wheels from the dealer (those are forged, black, Roland sands 21/18 combo) - that quote was $4200 CAD without tires 😬
With that cost I’m starting to look into trading in for a roctane- in my opinion they’ve nailed that design 😍

Wheel building is a skilled thing requiring some special tools. (NOT A plug) some experience is required to do it properly. I posted the Sources for the parts and am not familiar with anyone else making them. The R18 is a small market for custom parts and mostly from Germany.

This being said
http://www.buchananspokes.com/ has told me that they CAN make the spokes and build the wheels. You must supply the rims (from tts ).

The lacing pattern is different from stock when using the tts rims...it's not a big deal but I'm not sure if buchanan is aware of this.

Worst case you ALSO buy the spokes from TTS. You'll still save on shipping and roughly 1k in labour via Buchanan

Does this all make sense?

Thank you for the information. I have reached out to their sales 🤞

I did one fat tire conversion years ago. I put a 240 on a custom Yamaha Road Star Warrior. While it look very cool it handled like crap.
Now every bike will respond differently but none will handle better. People that spend thousands to fit one will all claim it doesn’t affect handling.
I rode a custom bike that was built using an S&S Rev X motor in an extended board track racer style. He built that bike using narrow tires front and rear and handled amazingly well.
After riding those two bikes I’m convinced that the fat tire rear is a fad that adds nothing positive to the handling of a bike.
Does look cool though.

My primary goal is the cool factor

I was going to suggest buying a Roctane, but hesitant as a noob.

MilwDave Is probly right
but I think it depends on your goals. The Roctane comes with 21/18 wheels but if you want a wide rear tire you CAN'T fit a 240wide on a 5.5" wide rim. And the roctane is not spoked so no rebuild.

It comes down to budget I think

I like the looks of the Rocktane, but would welcome some color. From 1997 to 2004, BMW had some of the best paint schemes I have ever seen on the R1200C bikes. After that it is hard to be attracted to monochrome.

Can I check with you what size of the rear rim did you go with?
18x8.0 or 18x6.0?

my 100th is on 19/16 stock, so i'm going after the wider rear, 200 or 240.
Specs from other bikes on 240 are the 8.0 rims are the most suited for 240 tires.
