That’s it exactly, short shift it. There’s no point holding onto high rpm’s on a long run because it’s not pleasant. The gearing is very tall on these bikes, ride the sweet spot and it’s effortless, silky smooth.
On the open road stick it in ‘Roll’ if you want less vibration and a smoother experience. BMW have no doubt designed this bike to be exactly the way it is, it’s one of its biggest charms, it feels like a big engine not a food blender.
I don’t recall a thread from anyone on the forum retro fitting the reverse to their bike but I’m sure it must be possible, like everything though it’s all about cost. As far as I know the starter motor does the reversing, there is only one motor.

Don’t think I’ve ever come across a UK bike without reverse, my understanding was it was only the US that had the option on the reverse, not sure why, could be wrong, probably am….

Ok, update. Decided to go for it, tried a 1 3/8” hole saw which fit nicely down the yap but it just wouldn’t cut, I think the stainless welded joint on the end of the tube was too hard. So I tried the 1 1/8” and that went through like butter, made a lovely neat job. Perfect. Like others before...
