Battery removal R18 Classic

Hi,

I have an R18 Classic. I have to pull my battery out. I’ve looked in the manual and removed the retaining strap and I’m holding up on the snap-in lug (plastic clip at the top left of the battery) and this thing won’t move. Also there doesn’t seem to be any good place to grab the battery to pull on it. I popped off the side cover on the right side of the bike with hopes I could push the battery out. There isn’t any opening. Ughhh.

The dealer added a pigtail connector. I’m wondering if they didn’t quite slide it in correctly. Where the battery is connected looks extremely tight, especially the wires at the top center. Any ideas? Am I doing something stupid? Does your battery look like my setup?

Thanks,

Tom

The battery is a tight A$$ fit to begin with.I added my pigtail to the right side hot spot.Because it was to much of a PITA to remove the battery. Also, you will need to reset the flashing idiot light if you disconnect the battery.
Sorry I can't be of more help.Maybe someone havs a video or better advise than me.

R18C,

Actually what you said might be just what I need to know. I’m trying to attach an accessory and I only needed to connect to the positive battery terminal.

I understand that there is a jump start terminal on the right side. i looked just now and it appears you can simply unscrew the terminal, carefully so I don’t ground out against the frame, and attach the accessory to it. Is that what you did? Is there anything special I need to know?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes
I split the long pickyback wire and routed one end to the batteries negitive terminal and attached the positive to the jump start terminal.

Like I said, tight fit and the bike needed to have the service light reset.

I pulled the battery out to a point to access both Pos and Neg terminals then installed the DelTran pigtail. Hardest part was pushing it back in, very tight fit, then an issue with getting the rubber hold down strap installed, had to get my wife to assist with securing the rubber strap, needed extra hands, PITA event for sure. Did not require a service light reset however, maybe because I worked quickly to restore battery power in approximately 8 minutes.

Hello Everyone,

I have a 2021 R18 First Edition.
My pigtail power adapter wasn't working and I wasn't very enthusiastic about removing that spider net of cables, but I gathered my strength and said let's do it. I removed the rubber strap, no problems, and pulled to remove the battery, it really came out easily and I noticed that it had generously long connection cables, the battery came out almost completely and that it rested on the exhaust pipe. I repaired the pigtail and everything returned to its place quite normal and without surprises.
Here some photos.
