Why Flash Your R18's ECU? (Info)

STAGE 1 BENEFITS

Perfect fueling, all the time! The BMW R18 comes equipped with wideband oxygen sensors stock which fully target fuel at every throttle position. Once setup, the bike is running an “auto” tuner all the time! Never needing custom adjustments for aftermarket parts, etc. The bike will adjust itself for the new parts! With the options below we have a full on unleashed and aural riding experience to enjoy this motorcycle to it’s best possible potential.

Here’s a list of everything we did with Stage 1:

  • Full-Time Closed Loop (FTCL) Fueling Adjustments
  • Removed RPM “Soft” Limiter
  • Rough Idle Fix – Cold and Warm
  • Increased Torque Limits
  • Increased Throttle Limiter To 100%
  • Sharper Throttle Response
  • More Aggressive “Rock” Mode Rumble
  • Increased Ignition Timing
  • Fixed Bucking and Rev Hang
  • Removed Top Speed Limiter

HOW WE ACCOMPLISH THIS WITH STAGE 1

RESTRICTIONS REMOVED. The OEM throttle model has “soft” and “hard” limits. The soft limits are where the R18 will start to close the throttle and limit torque by itself near the RPM limiter. We removed the soft limiter that comes in 600RPM before the factory RPM limiter.

MODIFIED FUELING FOR FULL-TIME CLOSED LOOP AND WILL TARGET FOR BEST FUELING AND PERFORMANCE. Full-time closed loop tuning means your R18 can be programmed to always target a perfect AFR (air/fuel ratio). This new technology was just introduced by BMW and we utilize it to work at all times for you with Stage 1. Want to change parts on your bike and worried it may change your fueling? Worry no more with Stage 1.

MODIFIED IGNITION FOR ENHANCED PERFORMANCE. Stage 1 optimizes the ignition tables for performance and reliability. The R18 has multiple ignition tables. Depending on fuel quality, the bike will either choose more aggressive or less aggressive ignition map.

IDLE AND STARTUP FIXES. Complaints of idle and startup issues are common. Stage 1 fixes these issues and ensures your bike starts up and idles right the first time, every time.

INCREASED TORQUE LIMITS. Torque limits removed to give you more torque in the midrange and low end (see dyno graphs below).

THROTTLE INCREASED TO 100%. Factory throttle limits are common these days. Our Stage 1 flash removes all throttle limiters and gives you the power your bike should have had right from the factory. The factory R18 throttle limiters are at 3500RPM.

SHARPER THROTTLE RESPONSE. Throttle response sharpened to give you a more lively and responsive feel on the road.

INCREASED “ROCK” MODE RUMBLE. Ready to Rock? “Rock” mode idle gives you slightly more rumble and shake, while “Roll” mode still retains its functions with no shake.

INCREASED IGNITION TIMING. Ignition timing carefully increased to yield optimized power while still giving you OEM reliability and rideability.

FIXED BUCKING AND REV HANG. Low RPM bucking and throttle lift “rev hang” have been reduced with Stage 1.

REMOVED TOP SPEED LIMITER. Top speed limiter of 110MPH had been removed with Stage 1

DYNO
The R18 isn’t know to be a powerhouse but there’s still power to be made. With our Stage 1 flash we were able to gain 6WHP and 4WTQ. We also were able to smooth the throttle with sharper response. All dyno runs performed back to back on our in-house DynoJet with the only difference being our Stage 1 flash.

BLUE = Stage 1 with 93 Pump Gas, 83WHP / 114WTQ
RED = Factory tuning with 93 Pump Gas, 77WHP / 110WTQ

The graph below shows partial throttle power. We gave the R18 more partial throttle power through the entire RPM range and were able to make the bike smoother and more predicable.

BLUE = Stage 1 with 93 Pump Gas
RED = Factory tuning with 93 Pump Gas

Thanks to all for your comments. Please,no need to thank me.I am not selling or getting anything in return for the kick starting of this group buy.I am just sharing my expierence and the advantages with having the bike tuned properly.Again,I'm grateful for the Forum and the members. We have many years of riding and wrenching expierence to share here.Being that the R18 is fairly new I too, have learned a bunch from you guys.Thank you.

To help and if you are gonna do the flash yourself,I would recommend finding the OBDII connector before you get the tuner.I did it the hard way,LOL!
I had the tuner in hand sitting in the sidecar(& at night).Unlike my Indian or HD's I've had expierence with, the connector is not as easy to find.

1st, the the right side panel needs removed on the R18 and R18C.Then remove the plastic tool holder(it holds the screw driver and handle). If I remember correctly it has 3 screws to remove it.The OBDII connector is located aft of the engine above the front part of the driveshaft near the frame.

I would like to mention a small the bump in the road.
Even with pictures of the manual,I had a bitch of a time till I figured out that it was a simple squeeze to the (horizontal) outboard and unseen inboard clips on OBDII connector (R18 & R18C).Take care of the small plastic bracket that holds the OBDII connector.Don't Break it!l Which in turn would cause the connector to fall onto the Driveshaft.

Last thing.I'm not sure but,I think the R18B & R18TC are in a different location.
Thanks for sending this. Very helpful. I was able to access the connector without any problems.

Would be nice to think that should we show enough support, it will be worth your while ensuring that any developments can be fed back to us over time.

I have my survey questions in! Just waiting impatiently. Lol.

For existing and future clients It should be noted that these guys have been impressively responsive from day 0.
I submitted mine last Friday AM. I am anxiously awaiting the file and to button everything up. 👍🏼

What mods have you done? I am curious as to what changes they make based on the answers to the questions. Given that I assume the wide band O2 sensors do their thing.

Maybe BT could weigh in a bit without giving away any secrets.

Inquiring minds. If I was a cat I would be dead.

It will be 26pcs if I can still use the discount code today. I tried yesterday, 13th Feb but after entering the code it said invalid code. I was still waiting for an answer from you regarding the shipping to Japan but the weekend delayed it. Thanks.
