Gas Smell

Anyone else have a really strong gasoline smell after riding? I have looked all over the site and have not found another thread about it. I have looked over everything on the bike and find no fuel leaks of any kind. Smell is only present after a ride. After a day of sitting no smell at all. Thinking something with the emissions canister thing like blocked or something but have no idea how to test that part or even really where it is on this bike.

Remove it. In front of rear wheel left side. Easily done.

Any chance are you smelling gas after riding with other riders, or are you smelling gas after riding solo?

Last year, one of our buddies bike was running rich and dumping rawl fuel via the exhaust system, and basically we all had a hint of fuel on or in our clothing... He was leading the ride for the most part..

No. It is definitely the bike after a ride. Smells for a few hours then goes away. Solo rides or with buddies always same result.

Any chance you're over filling the tank when topping off at the fueling station?

Maybe dripping fuel on your pant leg when transferring the nozzle from the tank back to the pump?

Do you treat the chrome exhaust with an oil or chrome polish, which maybe smells like fuel when burning off the exhaust system when at temperature..?

I thought this at first...overfilling. it happens after a ride whether I fill the tank or not during that ride. No fuel smell on my clothes at all. Have not used any polish or anything like that. No question it is coming from the bike.

Definitely a brain teaser ... Maybe the bike is running rich, where residual fuel is in the exhaust system...?

Have you modified your exhaust ..? Removed servo functionality, new exhaust or applied a new tuned map; or, is your bike still stock OEM?

Completely stock.

There have been a couple of cases of the plastic fitting on the fuel pump cracking. Usually this is caused when the fuel tank is removed or propped up.

Best NOT remove the EVAP canister as it will absorb most gas smells when parking the hot motor inside. The hot engine will warm the gasoline, causing it to expand. The idea is that the EVAP canister catches that. The capacity of the charcoal inside to do that is obviously limited but sufficient for normal use.

If/when the gas tank is accidentally overfilled, the EVAP canister can sometimes catch some gasoline. This should EVAPorate but untill it does, it can cause gas smell when parked.

Some symptoms of a failing charcoal canister : difficulty in filling a fuel tank or a bike that smells of fuel. Carbon can flow back towards tank / into the lines. Problems may arise. Evap canisterectomy solves these potential issues.

Going to dig into it this next week. Definitely has nothing to do with getting gas or not. Happens either way. No visible signs of leaks. Again today I checked on it after a ride. Immediately after parked no smell at all. About 20 minutes later there is definitely fuel smell. Like a valve is releasing it or something. It is not a complicated system so I will get at it abd report back once I figure it out.
