Bike
2025 bmw R18 Transcontinental
Well a week and about 800km after purchasing my new R18 Transcontinental and getting a possible severe damage fault warning me to stop, then at around 2000km I received a headlight failure warning alternating with a front side signal fault warning about every 20 seconds back and forth.

In all three cases there didn't turn out to be any problem or failure and all cleared after turning the bike entirely off then restarting it.

Has anyone else experienced such issues and if so what solved the problem? Is the a sensor module or cpu failure on record?

Any help would be appreciated.

Kev

It looks like your bike is wet; curious, is it from riding in the rain or was it recently washed or power washed?

I think the mentioned side lights, are actually within the headlight assembly for the TC and Model B.

Headlights were replaced under a recall campaign a year or two ago; perhaps your headlight is failing?

The first "serious fault" happened during a light rainfall and wet roads which was what I thought may have been the cause especially when the dealer said it didn't even show a fault code for that on the diagnostics scan run later that same day at the dealership.

The two alternating light fault flags may certainly indicate they could be part of the same lighting assembly but these two codes showed up midday on a hot dry day minutes after hitting the road again from a fuel stop and continued almost continuously until I shut the bike off which cleared them, and they never returned the rest of a 4 hour ride.

I have been out several times since with no codes but wonder if others have such issues? Three false warning flags with now real issues kind of make the warning and their purpose irrelevant and unreliable. Besides the warning popping up constantly over top of my gps screen and directions, what a pain!

It is worth checking & cleaning the fuses, as they are exposed to
the elements. a small amount of battery terminal grease keeps the
wet out.

I've only had the TPS warning lights go berserk on my 22 First Edition Model B, on the very last stretch of a six hour ride; I think, or at least have a theory that it was co-channel radio interference that the TPS sensors use to communicate with the ECU...

It showed the front and rear tires to have an extremely low PSI value; the problem self corrected, as it cleared before I could find a safe place to pull over and inspect my tires.

Knock on wood, all has been good up to now (18,000 miles)

I'm not going to be much help really - my 2021 TC hasn't throw out many transient fault codes and we've done over 23,000 kms. I got a few choice ones when the battery when flat though. If you haven't already, I'd check that the fuzes are each correctly seated in their various sockets (wind and road bumps can sometimes loosen them a fraction), that your battery is charging correctly (should show around 14.2-14.3-ish volts on the screen while the engine is running), and that nothing new shows up with all the lights switched on at the same time (hazards, headlight, high beam, daytime riding light, fog lights, brakes). If that's all a nil I'd then hook a gs911 or its equivalent and see which fault codes show up under which control unit and the underlying data, assuming you haven't done that already? Starlord also asked if your TC had the headlight recall sorted?

My Model B typically shows 14.2 V on the TFT while I'm riding.. I was expecting something closer to 13.8 V or so..

Sorry, typo - will go back and edit. You are of course spot on. Mine waffles around 14.2-14.3, and will sometimes briefly drop down to 14.1 and then bounce up again.

Edit: Interesting. I was expecting it to be a fraction higher on the TFT based on the battery stats, at around 14.4 or a bit more. I've run a volt meter across the terminals, both with the ignition only on and with the engine cranking then running. Screen is consistently 0.1-0.2 of a volt lower than on the terminals. Gs911 data shows "Battery voltage : 14.10 V" when the screen showed 14.2 v. Once I got to that point I gave up caring and went for a ride.

I just happened to look at my bike's TPS psi and battery voltage (14.2 V) over the last couple of recent rides this week... I was actually more interested in the front and rear tire's PSI values, which are almost spot on,.depending on when I take the measurement (temperature sensitive).

My TC shows 14.2 to 14.4V, mostly a steady 14.3 V when riding, a bigger concern is
constantly changing values with larger 2 or 3 volt differences.
