R18 B
Hello everyone,

I just got my r18 b. It had 10 miles when i bought it. Currently have 150 miles in and i checked the oil level, it is way below the minimum and i am freaking out…. I’ve attached a picture of the sight glass.

Should the dealer take care of this as far as correcting the oil level?

I am worried about the engine!….it doesn’t help either when there is no temp gauge…. Please advise…. Thank you!

Heat up the bike.
Let it sit for 10 minutes.
Pull it up so it is vertical and off the stand. You should see oil.

Perfect is halfway up the glass. But if you see any oil at all it is fine as it is only a couple ounces from top to bottom. If you add, add by the ounce so as not to overfill.

Enjoy!

When you are on the bike, you cant see the oil level. And when you are off the bike, it is on the side stand. Either way you lose. I park my R18TC with the side stand on a 1.5" by 1.5" by 5.5" pine board. The bike is still leaning safely as to not fall over, but you will see oil.

BMW screwed this one up just to drive us NUTS ! ! !!

Same as above. Tried my phone as a selfie. Sort of worked. Auto inspection Mirror better.

I hook up the Diagnostic unit and make sure the bike is level to the .01 degree :)

You sir, are a true master of your trade. I would have done something similar 😆

I wonder how you say Dip Stick in German ?
Ölmessstab
In typical german fashion it is a combination of several words. Broken down it is literally: Oil Messuring Stick.

But if you want to get your point across maybe you need to frame it to the engineers:

Hey Dipstick add a damn Dip Stick will you!

But for me I have resolved the issue by having a ride on Conrad Stand that holds the bike upright. Get back from a ride. Park it and then get off and look at the oil level. As shown below.

So you had to spend $100+ to buy a stand that allows you to check the oil. Having to spend $100's simply to do a routine task highlights the thoughtless engineering.

Well the reason for the purchase was ease of manouvering in the carport for space management. Good side effect is that the bike stands upright and I can check the oil.
But yep wold be easier if the sight glass read the oil level on the side stand

An oil sensor on the dash would be nice.. the BMW oil sight glass has been in play for years; in fact, this is my first BMW which didn't come equipped with a standard center stand assembly... (K75 S and my GS Adventure)
