 I am just about to purchase a 23 plate R18 TC but the dealer has already disabled the Reverse gear !!. This recall has been going on for some time now and I'm not sure what to do as I do need the reverse.

Does anyone know when its likely to be resolved as for me sadly it could be a deal breaker ( New knee replacement ) Many thanks in advance !!

I sounds like folks are already starting to have the Reverse functionality restored; which I'm guessing, is the installation of an improved Reverse relay module which has better weather protection against water ingress.

Strike a deal with your dealership; ask for an additional $1,000 off of your current settled price or $1,000 credit towards any R18 Accessories, which can be totally justified as the same $1,000 worth of compensation that BMW offered to all existing R18 owners.

Oh yeah.. get off the edge and on to your new TC..

From what I'm hearing on this forum the reverse gear recall has been corrected and in progress in the U.K.

Thanks for the reply but I want some hard facts as I really need the reverse gear .. I just sent an email to BMW .. I'll post the reply fingers crossed :)

Your right of course ... I don't do the edge to well ... I'm trying to change up from a wing ( The reverse on it works fine :-) ) I really fancy the R18 TC so if I can get round a temporary fix delay I will :)

My reverse gear works fine, however, I am getting the fix done in 3 day’s time. The bike is going for a headlamp check up and the mechanic will do the reverse gear fix since they have already stocked up the part in the shop. I know of another UK member also getting the fix done on Wednesday.
Where about are you in Kent? I am based in Langdon Hills, Basildon and my local garage is Sycamore Witham in Essex.

My understanding is that the fix involves installing a new relay that disables power to the reverse circuit. The thought being that as long as there’s no power, there’s no chance of arcing.

Nope.. the initial solution was to simply remove the 12 volt positive and or the Negative Ground power cables that went to the Reverse Control module a.k.a. the reverse relay.. However, now it sounds like BMW is currently replacing the above mentioned module with a new and improved relay module or Reverse module.

Even better because my first thought was that there were going to install the new relay right where I have the control module for the Dr. Jekill & Mr. Hyde exhaust :-)

I haven't actually seen any pictures or post Reverse module upgrades pictures, but I would assume it's a 1:1 replacement within the existing mounting location...

As Anibal says my bike is in this Wednesday for reverse fix. Marshall BMW Laceby, North East Lincolnshire. So don’t panic. The wheels are now turning. I have a dodgy left knee so I too need the reverse to be available. Hopefully when I get the bike back on Thursday I will be able to update this thread with some positive news on the subject!

From the parts list that was posted, it does look like it’s a relay and a wiring harness.

Yep, done, fixed 👍 Did update the ‘main’ thread running on this recall topic last night. So, Stockholme8 I don’t see that should put you off, speak to your dealer because the fix is available in the UK, fact. Don’t be fobbed off, if they want your business they can get on the phone and order the kit in. Oh and btw, it makes reversing my Roctane a ‘piece of p***’.

Hi, you have my sympathy as i had a full right knee replacement done November 24 ( It was a bit painful to begin with but its all good now ) hope you knee gets better. The dealer has arranged for the reverse gear recall to be done in the next couple of days :giggle: Happy days !!

I had shoulder surgery 7 weeks ago and I still don’t know when the Dr. will let me ride :-(

Hello.
Two weeks ago my dealer helped me with an order and he saw the recall for my Classic. Apparently, BMW Switzerland forgot to inform me.
Next Tuesday I'll drop the motorbike at the agent so they can replace the faulty part(s).
Hope that your shoulder will recover soon Stockholm8.

I was in the same position 6 weeks ago. Although they offered me the bike with a really large discount, I waked away as I need that reverse because of my very steep drive and challenging turn into my garage. If you need that reverse, don’t buy an R18 until it is fixed, even if it cost you more

Depending on the deal, I’d buy and leave it with them until they can fix it. Lots of our European members here are getting their bikes fixed. Looks like we’re seeing some North American folks scheduling fixes now.

The fix is being attended to "down-under". BMW have designed a new wiring loom for the module with override and cutoff relays in it in case of an electrical overload from the reverser module. The module itself has not been changed [well that is what the dealership told me here in "Bris-Vegas aka Brisbane Metro Area]. The theory is, IF water gets into the module, then the resultant electrical disruptions will trip the circuit and shut the system down (obviously with a massive fault alert on the TFT screen - already had one of those flashing RED alerts when my tyre (and for you North American's - yes tyre it is spelled correctly in the "Kings English" :ROFLMAO:) for pressures were way off). So for anyone being reluctant to purchase - don't be - the R18
