Okay, I've been meaning to ask about this. I've taken the engine plates off and ridden the bike that way for two weeks. Can't say it made a detectable difference, and made no difference to fuel stats. Also, when I have the bike parked in neutral and the engine revving there is only a very minor (tiny) air flow in through the cover holes shown in Lennstang's photos. My feeling is that air intake only really changes if you've changed over the air filter and removed the two black plastic snorkels. Any thoughts?

I've had a deep and meaning discussion with myself over a beer about this. My thoughts: 1. I like the idea of the honeycombed or louvered vented plates - very cool; and 2. it makes engineering sense, particularly if the rest of the restrictive intake hardware is out of the way.

So, due to an acute attack of FOMO over gucci engine plates, and pending the air filter mods, I've put a small nut and a washer as spacers behind the engine plate to give it a 5 mm standoff from the air intake cover, creating an air gap all round.

I'm now three weeks and three tank fills into the vented intake trial. I've convinced myself that there is in fact a very slight difference - acceleration from low revs is, maybe, fractionally better, and the acceleration curve is, again, a smidge smoother. On a scale of 1 to entirely subjective but nice if it works for you, I'd say its at the "nice if" end. Can't hurt though, and looks cool. So, here's my engine plates and what they look like on with the stand-off spacer nuts behind them.

I’ve done the spacer thing on both sides after refitting my custom name plate so it is all matching. As much as I liked the ‘drilled OEM plate’, my ocd won’t allow imbalance.
I’m riding it next week, so I’ll see if there’s a noticeable difference.

Hi everybody. My louvered plates are now available on our website. Here's the link

I installed the LOUVERED PERFORMANCE PLATES from LJE Products ljeproducts.com Outstanding fit and finish. Easy 2 minute install. They look great. As far as horsepower, I'll let the dyno charts speak. I think along with other intake upgrades, there will be gains. I'm thinking the performance filter I have heard so much good about next. BMW R18 VENT.jpg

Now where to put the 1802cc.... picture 1, 2 or in the bin....?

I'm thinking no2.... as everything is reversible when my mood changes.

Off course I blue tacked it everywhere.....

And also on some of my body parts..... but I know how excited people can get with sleeves and shoes so I omitted those, as awesome as one or two were.

Great looking bike. Thank you for posting!

Above vents or on the jug covers
I really like the look of the "1802" on the CF horns, but found myself looking for something on the jug covers - that big blank spot on the CF is just asking for an "R 18 FIRST EDITION" or something similar in matching script. You know you want to. ;)

Well, I've ordered something for the jugs.... but meanwhile, down on the farm, whilst cleaning and oiling the air filter today I got the Dremel knock off out and tidied up the "flow" into the motor via the air tube "thinga me bobs".

Then I use my "light tunnel"

To "see the light"

And it does get in.... quite a little hot box up there in filter land. I was a bit interested in the height relationship between the air inlet and filter.... seems ok.... I couldn't see much more that I could really do.... except bigger external scoops.... so will keep looking.

Lennstang,
I'm about 90 days late to your intro on louvered badges. I thought the chrome version looked terrific. Do you have a copy of the one pictured for sale? Just thinking..........

We have plenty of the chrome versions in stock. We also have a different design you can see on our website. European sales have been great!
