Recall? On all models with Reverse

Leaking? I guess I didn’t even imagine there’s any kind of liquid in there.
I didn't dig into the answer that I got regarding the cause of the recall. Not actually owning an R18 yet, I don't have any hands-on experience with one. I would suspect that if the lever engages reverse, the mechanism probably goes through the wall of the transmission case to engage the reverse gear. I suppose the other way they could achieve the reverse movement would be to run the starter backwards. If the BMW engineers chose that option, I don't see why you would need a lever at all since that could easily be handled electronically, unless the lever was there to ensure the transmission was de-clutched from the motor so it could not accidentally be spun backwards, which would not be recommended.

Pretty sure it uses the starter motor. From what I read in the past, folks had the reverse either not activate or found it difficult to bring it out of reverse. There’s something with not having tension on the mechanism when you’re flipping it out of reverse.

I guess an updated module or whatever it is that won’t fail is appreciated.

I agree with you 100%, it definitely uses the starter motor for movement. My question was does the starter motor turn in the same direction all the time. If so, the transmission would have to have a reversing gear to turn the drive shaft in the opposite direction. If the starter motor reversed direction, no reverse gear would be necessary.

It definitely feels like there’s something that engages with moving the reverse lever, but beyond that, I’m out of my depth in understanding how it works.

It uses the electric starter switch to activate the starter motor; getting it out of Reverse, you can not have any tension or the bike's weight on the mechanism.

I typically rock the bike forward and grab the front brake to hold the bike in place, which removes any tension resting on the Reverse drive and allows for disengaging the Reverse lever.

Don't take my word for it, give them a call. Engle is a long standing BMW dealer in Kansas City. I was there in person yesterday and they told me they couldn't sell me the brand new Transcontinental that is sitting on the floor. Nor could they sell me any other R18 with reverse. I also spoke with Gateway BMW in St. Louis. They told me they could possibly sell me a bike, but would not be able to deliver the bike until the recall situation is sorted.

I didn't join the group to start trouble or create controversy. Maybe before floating the idea that new members are ill intentioned, pick up the phone and call a dealer. I would bet they were all notified at the same time.

https://www.englemotors.comHow about easing up a bit on the rhetoric and being so argumenatively defensive. It's not your info that's causing concern, it's your approach and attitide.
We have an adage, learned from long experience: Trust, but verify.
Which we do here.
if your venting, let us know... we all need to vent occasionally. If just bitchin', try a calm professionalism rather than irate rant.
And, your follow up.was much more helpful. Thank you.

Not venting or bitching. I shared information I got directly from the dealer yesterday. Rather than throw shade at two members because they are new, do that verify thing by actually picking up a phone and calling a dealer. Obviously the other verification methods that were used, were not up to date on information that had just been released.

Hello from GERMANY

the info circulatig here is: the reversing aid is to be deactivated because the control unit could pose a fire hazard. New control units will probably not be available until the first quarter of 2025.
Until they get it fixed, if you send for service now they will probably deactivate it.
Seems they waited for bike season to end here to start the call.

Wow, that would mean I can't buy a new bike until next year! I'm going to look around at the used bikes, but this doesn't give me a lot of confidence in buying a BMW considering this is on the back of the headlight recall that seemed to drag on for some time as well.

Called Kissell Motorsports to confirm recall. They confirmed it, but also says there is no guidance for a fix yet.
It’s the headlight debacle all over again. It’ll take until BMW develops a fix, builds it, and ships it. Seems like it was months between recall notice and the remedy becoming available for the headlight. I’d suspect a similar timeline for this. Maybe by spring 25? Prove me wrong, BMW.

That just sucks beyond. By the sounds of it, being a well known defect they should have been ON IT --long before this. But because BMW doesn't have a fix GTG 100's of dealers... (and me) are now missing out on sales? Rather a bit of utter incompetence IYAM.

I´m really interested in this topic. Specially to know if, the recall is real, since what models (and years). In my case, my reverse module failed and the dealer said my bike wasn't under warranty anymore and had to paid for the new module. If now, there is an issue with the reverse, and affects all the years/models, maybe I would have a chance to recover my money

Any chance, did you ask for the failed reverse module; if so, we would all love to see some dissected photos..?

At least forum members ScottSemone, deleted member 1618 and myself would love to see pictures...

There’s this -

Not sure how easy it’ll be to navigate, but you may be able to get some compensation.
