Here in Portugal my dealer has confirmed a date for my reverse module fix. R18 Classic.

He told me that the fix is about an hour’s work, but the subsequent re-programming means that the bike needs to stay overnight.

Does anyone know exactly what such a lengthy flash is actually doing?

I could understand a-few lines of code perhaps detailing voltage, current draw, operation time, temperature etc

But several hours plugged in to the computer is obviously a major software flash?

What are they doing to my bike???

My appointment also includes overnight stay for soft update.
They gave me no details, but they never do ... Except for the first one about the "whining" fuel pump.
I think it's more than the reverse concern. We don't know either what they are doing when Windows updates.
I have no concern about it, It will be my fourth update since 2020.

When I had mine done, they told me they need to tell the bike’s electronics that a new part was fitted to avoid getting errors.
They keep it overnight because during the day they are working on different machines and at night they just leave the bike plugged to the computer so the the programming is done. If you think about it, they may need the only laptop or one of two to work on other bikes during the day that may not need a lengthy programming.

The previous appointment, I had to cancel it, was 1 hour only. It was 3 weeks ago.

Good point about needing the computer connection during the day.

Upon further questioning, the technician said that when he did his first one he was surprised that the software flash “took all afternoon” but he did not know what was in the flash.

That is odd. I had my 2 bikes done in one day last week. The first bike included the annual inspection, and was completed at 12:30. I then swapped the bikes over, and the second bike was completed at 15:30.

Yes,
I was very surprised by my dealer’s comments on the time needed for the software flash.
That is what got me wondering exactly what the flash consists of.

Had mine done recently. took dealership 3 hours and required a 1 hour full ECU reflash according to them. Soo good to have R working!

Had mine overnight but tbh as long as it was fixed I was ok with that. Software update was mentioned as a passing comment.

My TC is having the reverse fix done tomorrow. The software update
is done overnight when there is less demand on the internet system.
Less chance of the download failing & messing things up.

My bike was updated to S/W Version: 014_013_030 after the Reverse functionality was restored (I posted pictures of the new bracket which holds the BOSH relay and wiring harness); I had to pair all of my devices as of the bike was brand new (phone, media and helmet)

Just be prepared to do that when you pick up your bike...

I booked my 100 years in for 1st service and reverse recall, was told 2.5 to 3 hours… after 6 hours they returned the bike but without the reverse recall completed as they said there was a part they were missing! They called me again, they want to pick the bike up so they can find a slot to do the replacement…. They compensated me on not having the reverse sorted and for hanging around longer so i’m not upset… but I do wonder if something is going on that they are not on top of!

Maybe the dealership did not prepare themselves for the job and later realised their mistake. Mine got done without any issues. They did say they needed the bike overnight to update the software and they gave me a loaner for me to use whilst waiting.

Possibly, just thought it strange being told 2.5 to 3 hours, taking 6 to not do the replacement then being told they preferred to pick the bike up and hold it for a few days to try and fit it in!
Anyway, as long as it gets done this time as I find it really useful to have… mine worked fine until I washed the bike the second time, then it stopped working, so I was only without it on my last 2 days out with the bike! 🤞

Update… bike was picked up and delivered back to me the next day, all seems good! 😎

Had it done + Update.
No trouble.
It seems they had to remove the gears levers, because I had to re-adjust them when back home.
