Just got a letter here in Spain that they are recalling the bikes for the reverse gear issue. Seems that there are some humidity issues affecting those bikes operating in hot/humid climates. They are promising a 'free accessory' but have no idea what that means

Its obviously no big deal here in the UK my local dealership have not sent me any mail about this , i had to go to the dealership and they explained we have not got around to sending out letters to our customers yet ? What happened to BMW ? definitely not the same since they were taken over by Vertu .

I spoke to my dealer a little while ago and they were aware and said the letters would probably be sent out in Nov. DVLA does not have records of a recall, even the infamous adaptive head light does not appears there, but tbh I can’t remember a UK member stating theirs failed.

Does the letter mention anything regarding "compensation" for the inconvenience of disabling a feature that was paid for and perhaps one of the key attributes of selecting an R18 BMW vs a Harley..?

Me personally, the $1,000 compensation credit was appealing as it allowed me to purchase an upgraded seat that I normally would not pay for..

Took the bike to San Jose BMW for 1 yr service since it was sitting in garage and collecting dust almost for 8 months now and still at 3912 miles. But that SERVICE NEEDED warning message on the screen was scaring the prospective buyers. So I took it out, wiped the dust off, cleaned spider webs and off we go.
At service I've been told they HAVE to DISABLE the reverse before they hand me the bike back.
Also they took care off the headlight recall issue and change whatever part is needed to be replaced.
When I asked what will happen with the reverse function, I've been told that BMW has no solution to the issue yet but at the moment they ordered to all services for immediate disablement of the reverse function. They are hoping to find a solution in the future with no known date yet...
I've left the dealership filled with confidence and self assurance knowing that bunch of engineers in Germany losing their sleep and working day and night to solve the issue that inconvenienced us.
So now my 900+ lb bike has no reverse and I don't know how it will effect its sale...
I dropped the price to $14,500 for it and still not a lot of interest and the only person who was interested a little bit was told this issue and he said "thank you but I need to think more about this, I'll call you"...

Dealership told me our generous(!) mother BMW is offering up to $1000 credit towards accessories for R18TC for the inconvenience this reverse issue caused...
Unfortunately their parts department confirmed that the most crap worth to put on this thing is costing more than $1000... Like a different seat, or Billet valve covers etc etc. So basically BMW's solution to the inconvenience is for us to spend more $$$ on the bike they couldn't make it right in the first place and currently no solution to fix it.
Interesting thought process from friendly Germans...
To me, BMW's solution is felt like me buying a 5 carat diamond ring to the cheating wife I am trying to divorce!
Oh well. Let's see how this episode will end?

I have always avoided parking any bike in a downhill limited distance position. For that reason I have never used a reverse feature.
If facing a $1,000 expense to fix a reverse problem, I’d suggest my method of avoiding downhill parking.
Not trying to ignore your frustration.
I don't think any rider would try to park a bike that weighing 950 lb empty in a downhill location unless they have no other option at all. Most riders even in that situation will avoid downhill parking if they know they have no Reverse function on their bikes.
But these type of bikes generally ridden by 60+ yr old riders mostly and as few other riders here mentioned, flat but gravel surfaces or pushing it backwards out of a garage with kind of slippery floor surface as in my case may be an inconvenience too.
When I was buying my Goldwing 1800 reverse was a BIG reason I considered that bike as same as when I was buying my R18TC. If these type bikes were offered without a reverse I wouldn't even go near it. Just for that in case if it needed pushing back) reason when I purchased my second GSA model I chose to purchase factory low suspension version. Because 5 years ago on my ride to Sturgis I tried to push back my standard height GSA and right foot slipped on gravel and injured my knee so badly that I was in crutches for a month afterwards.
Again 950 lb bike + 240 lbs me on it + 10 lb crap in trunk = 1200 lbs.... Even at 6'1" with 34" inseam it is not a fun exercise trying to push that much weight backwards. Even in a flat, hard and clean surface. Imagine what would you face if you were on the gravel, wet, dusty and all kinds of other slippery surfaces. So even if parking downhill is strictly avoided still it doesn't eliminates the possible inconvenient situations some riders may've find themselves in...

There's a reason these bikes do not come with a center kickstand and I believe the cost ain't the reason! ;)

Maybe go with the following accessories in order to give your TC some sex appeal; especially if trying to sell it, while staying under the $1K limit:

RSD Machined Mirrors
RSD Machined Hand Levers

Or the Brake/Clutch & Rear Brake Reservoir Covers

Or the Engine Cover Trim Piece

There is some validity to your argument but I'd like to keep it as original as possible. If buyer decides to use that option I'll leave it up to him/her.

At the very least... Order the accessories and sell them on the forum.. I think the $1,000 compensation credit expires, once the Reverse recall solution is available?

I’ll buy everyone’s coupon for $500 each. I wonder if they are transferable or if I could use more than 1?

I assume we can order whatever $1000 worth part you want or need and then sell it to you for $500 + shipping...
That’s what I was thinking. Idk there could be people with no need for the credit. And who couldn’t use an extra $500 to spend this holiday?

Need, lol, a pair of the machined cyl head covers. So 1 at a time I guess.
Oh I see they sell pair for $1170 + tax + shipping. So that's why 1 at a time I guess, huh? LOL
Or you can add $500 + shipping (possibly $50)+ whatever is the overage of $1000 (possibly $250) and have them still at a good discounted price...
So around $800 you can have them instead of spending $1170+Tax+shipping = ~ $1300
;)

EDIT... EDIT... EDIT :
Sorry, I forgot we are talking about BMW parts and for a second I thought a pair was $1170 + Tax, etc... Now I realized that's the price of EACH side????? Crap!!!
Now I understand why you have to buy one at a time! DUH for me!

These are the machined ones. I think they are just under 2k per pair

Thinking more clearly, I only need one person who needs some Christmas cash and I will buy the other one with my credit.

All of you keeping score at home likely already figured that out.
