Reverse gear recall problem

R18 Ist edition. Never had any problems with my reverse . Use it every time to get the bike backed off the front wheel chock in the garage so it stands upright .
Not heard anything from Motorrad but decided to send a mail on tuesday to check it out . They took the bike in on friday , fitted a new reverse module , checked my adaptive headlight , all ok , washed the bike and i picked it up early saterday morning . all good .

My motorcycle was also recalled. At first, they told me that only the relay needed to be replaced. They replaced it, but then they found that the reverse gear was not working and said that the control unit also needs to be replaced.

However, they mentioned that if BMW headquarters does not approve the replacement of the control unit, they may charge me for the part and the work.

How is the situation for you? Have any of you experienced the same issue? What would you recommend I do in this case?

As far as I am aware, the recall is due to a fault with the reverse mechanism, hence the recall. Gather evidence and make sure you push BMW to fix without charge. It's their problem, not yours.

My understanding is that a recall is mandatory and the full fix is free of charge to the owner, i.e. you. You should not under any circumstances be asked to pick up part of the bill. There are hundreds of owners on this forum, many very active and I don’t recall (no pun intended) anyone else saying they had to pay and I’m sure they would have!
 
I had my reverse circuit safety recall performed today at the local dealership. 2021 FE, I'm outside of warranty.

They replaced the wiring harness and flashed the ECU. My reverse gear did not work and they informed that my "reverse control unit" is bad. The control unit (pn 61355B5C703) is not part of the recall, its a $1000 part and they charge $200/hr for labor so, I brought the bike home with reverse not working at no charge.

I hope they expand the recall to include the control unit so I can get it fixed without paying $1200. Otherwise, I will try to source a working control unit and install myself. Will bide my time for a little while looking into this.

It was 105 degrees, the dealerships AC was broken, and their drink frig was down. I drank warm water and waited two hours. Not a great experience. Had to wipe my brentune and write original so that'll cost me $200 bucks. I've had more fun at the dentist.

Did you use the Reverse prior?

I'm surprised it failed, as the control unit appears to be a pretty simple circuit; have you tried removing it and taking a closer look at it?
 
My reverse was working fine until a few weeks ago when I got caught in a gnarly down pour. Rode about 10 miles in a real drenching rain. So their diagnosis of bad control unit tracks. I don't want to pay a grand for a new one just to have it fail from getting wet. Another reason I will bide my time to figure this out. I haven't tried removing it yet.

What did you wipe your tune if you’re out of warranty?

The reverse module isn't too bad to remove, but will require some patience and switching through gears in order to remove screws holding covers in place, if you have a heel shifter in place.

Maybe remove the Negative ground cable on the battery, before attempting to removing power connections from the module; as many of the wiring is constant "HOT".

I'm a Brentune customer, when the dealership updates the ECU, you have to load a new tune, to avoid re-licensing fees, you put the ECU software back to its old non tuned file before they update it, then BT-moto sends you a new tune for that software revision.

Thanks for this info.

I also noticed driving back to work from the dealership after the service that I was shifting with more difficulty. Trying to shift from 1 to 2 I would land in N sometimes. Trying to shift 2 to 3 it would stay in 2. Same with 3 to 4. I don't think new software would cause that, perhaps the new wiring harness, or something else they had to touch, is obstructing the gear shifting linkage. I will suss that out next chance I get to wrench.

The dealership did their job, replaced the harness and flashed the ECU. In this heat, I'm sure they are workin hard to get their AC fixed. Not disparaging them. I went in with no reverse and left w no reverse. I'm disappointed about that. I think folks with a bad reverse controller should get a new one as part of the recall, but I'll get it sorted eventually.
