On my way to work..bike shut off, I rolled to sidewalk and smelled something. Pushed it onto sidewalk, then this. Had reverse recall done last year but looks like it started in that same area.

Sorry for your lost!

wow

Looks more like the 12V socket shorted.

I am pleased the compact fire extinguisher I want to fit arrives tomorrow.

Uh. Holy @!$%

I think I would have put it out rather than film it… but that’s just me🤔
If it’s on YouTube it’s gonna do wonders for the rep of our bikes, and residuals of course that’s let’s be honest, have had a hard time as it is. Sorry about your bike but wish you hadn’t posted it tbh. We all lose.

It ís rather striking that the R18 model range seems to be the subject of such. It is how the world works today. Just contemplate our riding gear; see The Wild One. Meeting the nicest people on a Honda was the much the same counter movement. Now extrapolate to our current media steered perceptions...

There was (is) a YouTuber that goes by the name of Revelator Alf, I don’t follow him but am aware of him and he’s the sort that will jump on this with a clickbaity title to pull in views. He did it with the reverse recall and had his facts all wrong and talked the whole thing up. This is just catnip for the likes of him. Sorry to say.

YouTube is full of Harleys and everything else on fire. Comes with the reality of strapping a gas tank to an engine and a battery on wheels. @Puck I’m sorry this happened to you but more so glad you were able to pull over and you’re alright.

Damn that sucks, i really like to know what caused it, could you keep us posted?

Yes, I’m here. I called insurance and they totaled it and sent a truck to pick it up, so I have no idea what happened. Maybe they will look it over and let me know. I certainly don’t think this is indicative of the model as I have never heard of this happening to anyone else. I really liked the bike and would even consider same model again, so I’m not trying to ruin the brand or anything, just trying to let other know what happened.

Thanks Puck, goodonya! Glad you're okay and your insurance came through for you.

I remember, years ago, all the brouhaha when some guy posted a video when his R1200GS final drive caught fire (it really did happen and I think some others also reported this). The sky-is-falling people who were teeth-gnashing & hair-pulling about the 'death knell' of GS product line was simultaneously annoying and ironically humorous. And the GS line is still going strong. The R18 line will be fine!

This is unsettling. Can't imagine it would happen. I ride my R18 to work (28 miles one way) at highway speed. Would hate to bail.

Well insurance covered it, that is sómething.
Still rather an unsettling experience. My empathy.

As to what happened... Not sure I do.

Of course you share it, but what it helps me, us??

But yes, it is a confirmation of having an extinguisher on the sidecar rig. Would not have one on a solo bike.

Anyway; phew you got it covered, hope you get to hear what caused it and share that too.

Is there an opportunity to send the video, and perhaps have BMW North America retrieve the bike for root cause analysis?

The seat of the fire looks like the area where the reverse relay module is located; was there any other electrical components or work that you had added to the bike that might have caused this?

Any chance, do you have any post Reverse recall work pictures; I'm curious if you remember any noise or smells, days prior to this event unfolding?

Glad to hear you are OK though..

Ok, note to self, keep hydrated (pee before plan b) and always carry some beer(plan b).... (beers more useful then fire ext if bike doesn't catch fire). If have sidecar then always have a slab.... 12 tins for fire and 12 for after.
