Ok, note to self, keep hydrated (pee before plan b) and always carry some beer(plan b).... (beers more useful then fire ext if bike doesn't catch fire and thirsty). If have sidecar then always have a slab.... 12 tins for fire and 12 for after.
And this why we rock… Aussie, Aussie, Aussie 🏆🏁🇦🇺

An electrical fire??? Hmmm. Someone would need to film thát 🫣
We train for it on monday nights in "astray...la".... get a few drinking buddies together to form a cone.... sneek up on it then and snuff it out. Real men don't fear 12v.... 48v is when I'd go straight to beer (always have better ideas after a few beers).

A 12V battery is enough for some welding; so would be 12V-asectomy 🫣

Wine does not travel as well as beer, so best

And if there’s no fire hose available and we’ve had a few beers, no need to call the Fire Department 😉

Is there an opportunity to send the video, and perhaps have BMW North America retrieve the bike for root cause analysis?

The seat of the fire looks like the area where the reverse relay module is located; was there any other electrical components or work that you had added to the bike that might have caused this?

Any chance, do you have any post Reverse recall work pictures; I'm curious if you remember any noise or smells, days prior to this event unfolding?

Glad to hear you are OK though..
@Puck - did you ride your bike in the rain a lot..?

You suspect water caused a short?
I can hardly imagine that as water is not a thát good conductor at 12V. My above comment about pee is tongue in cheek.
Nah... The BMW reverse recall campaign mentioned moisture, moist climates, etc which was a concern regarding the reverse relay module from being electrically overstressed which would result in a fire... I imagine corrosion, or poor surface contact pressure between two conductor points results in higher current, due to resistance arcing or pitting..

If electrical... the shorted current carrying wire would need to get so hot, that the insulation would burn away and glow to an ignition point to an adjacent harness. Even the entire electrical system is fused at 50A; maybe something connected directly to the battery terminal with no fuse.

Something definitely wasn't fused... Puck did mention that the bike stalled or just stopped running, just prior ..

No, haven’t been caught out in the rain in over a year, so I don’t believe it was water related. Nothing directly connected to battery except the battery tender which was installed by dealer.

Clearly it was an upset bombardier beetle.... "acts as a living, explosive chemical weapon. It shoots a boiling, noxious chemical spray from its abdomen to defend against predators" much like an upset lithium battery.

Like an obese drunk with an upset stomach!

On my way to work..bike shut off, I rolled to sidewalk and smelled something. Pushed it onto sidewalk, then this. Had reverse recall done last year but looks like it started in that same area.

That's absolutely shocking you think in this day and age this couldn't happen take it it's a write off

It’s a bit sad when we now have to consider what fire extinguisher to choose rather than what seat, decals or exhaust 🤔🥺

Well, that is a personal perception imo. It is not either or is it and expense wise a fire extinguisher is beer money only.

Also I would not consider it AT ALL for a solo bike.
I have only fitted mine because of a passenger in the sidecar.
Would have regardless of the brand and incidents on youtube.
