You can report your first post and request it for sure. I’m sorry we upset you. I honestly thought it’d be a fun new oil thread and not cause you stress. I’m sorry.

Simple here...BMW factory spec oil until warrantee is out....then whatever I want thereafter. I change oil myself and keep the empty's with receipt while in warrantee. Not an earth shaking effort or expense.

it's a slippery slope (oil thread) . . . and will be discussed and argued about on every car/moto forum for ever and ever amen. I would say use the best oil you can afford, in the correct weight. Change it yourself so you know it's done correctly, and so you can feel better about spending more on Good Oil

Dont forget to change the final drive too. Here’s mine after 600 miles. Left is the factory snd right is the fresh one.

I just checked the work order on my 600 mi service done in May...doesn't say they changed the final drive oil???

FD is not required at 600 service, but at 12 K intervals. Many do it every service as it's easy and good peace of mind, YRMV.

I've seen the "black" final drive fluid comments on first services of BMWs for years and it is consistent with the presence of moly used during assembly and also the subsequent changes being "clean" or much cleaner as it is flushed over the initial services. You could save a sample if you want to monitor it or even send it in for analysis along with engine oil if going that far to establish a baseline if you are concerned/curious.

🍻

Does anyone know what BMW uses as their break in oil from the factory?

Generally it’s a straight weight oil (w50 right?
does it really matter?
go to your first service and add the oil you would like.
oil threads will always be a question on these forums, it no big deal for new people to ask about oil.
i dont think there is any answer is better then the rest,,its more like an opinion rather than what to do.
i run shell 15/40 synthetic diesel oil....t6

I’m already on my third oil change at this point and coming up on my 4th soon.

My original question was from last year that somehow was resurrected. I was merely curious on what is run when it leaves Berlin because my dealer was giving me the run around for booking my first service on time and I needed my bike. I still hope it wasn’t break-in oil but alas here we are a year later and my bike seems okay.

I’m going to do a sample analysis in Motul once I dump the oil.

im sure it will be okay...oil has come a long way its all pretty good.
i will change every 4000-5000 miles.

BobW is correct....I had the Blackstone Labs first final drive fluid analysis done almost 2 years ago during a 5000 mile second oil change on my first R18 ...it was a moly type product from the factory. I remember calling Blackstone to question the dark Moly which was indicated in the final drive analysis report.....the result was as I remember, lubrication and viscosity was still at factory spec and no sediment. Regarding the factory recommended 12k interval; out of judicial caution, I change final drive fluid at 10k mile intervals along with my typical 5k mile oil/filter changes.

The BMW specified final drive fluid and engine oil is a very simple do it yourself job.

I also let the old final drive fluid drip overnight so as to lesson the possibility of overfill (folks in the past have reported overfill streaks on rear hub). Before plugging, I carefully twist the end of a shop towel an inch up the drain hole to soak up any bottom residual and examine for debris. Why? Dealerships (especially auto) 'typically' rush drain until fluid flow slows to drip level, plug and refill, especially if there are several vehicles waiting. I want to reduce possibility of residual old fluid remaining. I do the same with engine oil. I am Just anal and sleep better!

Im about the same with my routine. I typically dump my oil, get a few beers down the hatch, then make a return trip an hour or so later to finish what I started.

That’s what im expecting too for 600miles. but when i get there to buy oil and oil filter the tech told me to buy final gear oil as well as they are changing it on the first service. Then you can follow the manual next time.

About that 42 oil ? Is that a synthetic or a recycled oil ? I dont want to have to carry a heavyweight oil home as my back is fragile .

I just assumed the dealer changed the final drive oil at 600, but maybe not. I suspect most of you are using the heavier gear oil back there, but there was never a consensus on whether or not it should be 75w-90 or 75w-140
