I just checked the work order on my 600 mi service done in May...doesn't say they changed the final drive oil???Dont forget to change the final drive too. Here’s mine after 600 miles. Left is the factory snd right is the fresh one.
does it really matter?Does anyone know what BMW uses as their break in oil from the factory?
Generally it’s a straight weight oil (w50 right?
im sure it will be okay...oil has come a long way its all pretty good.I’m already on my third oil change at this point and coming up on my 4th soon.
My original question was from last year that somehow was resurrected. I was merely curious on what is run when it leaves Berlin because my dealer was giving me the run around for booking my first service on time and I needed my bike. I still hope it wasn’t break-in oil but alas here we are a year later and my bike seems okay.
I’m going to do a sample analysis in Motul once I dump the oil.
Im about the same with my routine. I typically dump my oil, get a few beers down the hatch, then make a return trip an hour or so later to finish what I started.BobW is correct....I had the Blackstone Labs first final drive fluid analysis done almost 2 years ago during a 5000 mile second oil change on my first R18 ...it was a moly type product from the factory. I remember calling Blackstone to question the dark Moly which was indicated in the final drive analysis report.....the result was as I remember, lubrication and viscosity was still at factory spec and no sediment. Regarding the factory recommended 12k interval; out of judicial caution, I change final drive fluid at 10k mile intervals along with my typical 5k mile oil/filter changes.
The BMW specified final drive fluid and engine oil is a very simple do it yourself job.
I also let the old final drive fluid drip overnight so as to lesson the possibility of overfill (folks in the past have reported overfill streaks on rear hub). Before plugging, I carefully twist the end of a shop towel an inch up the drain hole to soak up any bottom residual and examine for debris. Why? Dealerships (especially auto) 'typically' rush drain until fluid flow slows to drip level, plug and refill, especially if there are several vehicles waiting. I want to reduce possibility of residual old fluid remaining. I do the same with engine oil. I am Just anal and sleep better!
That’s what im expecting too for 600miles. but when i get there to buy oil and oil filter the tech told me to buy final gear oil as well as they are changing it on the first service. Then you can follow the manual next time.I just checked the work order on my 600 mi service done in May...doesn't say they changed the final drive oil???
