Mine's now gone also. Been charging the battery and having known this was an issue and "thinking this'll never happen to me", I pushed the side cover back in as firmly as I could before ride - or so I thought.

I'm starting to think along the lines of coming up with some sort of leash for these things...
Maybe epoxy an anchor point on the inside surface of the side panels and tether them to the frame of the bike?

How about something like this, used them on my R1100RT mirrors as the mirror pods
were about £200 to replace.

Did you ever figure out whether “black storm” is the correct color for the 100 Years Edition? I lost my tool kit cover as well and need replacement.
Pretty sure that is correct. My BMW dealership took my reg number and ordered the part from Germany.
I now charge via the Din port and don't take the cover off, unless necessary. Don't want to have to pay for another.

I attatched a zip tie anchor to mine to keep if from falling off. again. Expensive fix

Not without taking it off again. Let me see what I can do but every time i do i get more nervous about it

I totally understand the hesitation. No worries at all if you’d rather not remove the panel again. I too would be nervous at the prospect of the point of attachment becoming less secure with each removal of the panel.
Having said that, if you do end up removing the panel for any reason in the future, take a picture and share, would you? I’d really appreciate that.

for sure, I will if I have to remove it again. Probably putting a pigtail in there sooner than later so I'll see what I can do.

So reading this chat has made me paranoid about my side covers. Anyone looked into something like the above? Way too long but can be adjusted. Havnt pulled the cover yet to see if they can be attached but could be an option.
Thoughts for those of you who have investigated it?
8Euro for 2 on Amazon. Local hardware store also sells the stainless wire rope and fittings. Seems a bit better than the cost of the mirror safety link above.

I used fishing line... However, the Model B side panels are plastic and allows for a purchase point to feed the fishing line through...
I have a braided metal fishing line, that I use for salt water toothy critters, that I thought about using for the FE Bobber Project bike, as the side panels are metal...

ok, I ran the pigtail and tucked it neatly behind the tool holding cover (pic 1), then made it accessible by wrapping the rain cover around the top (pic 2) then instead of the zip ties, I found an old Garmin bike computer tether and wrapped it around the top right corner tab on the cover, (pic 3) and screwed the anchor end into the top most mounting screw of the tool holder (pic 4). I don't think it will hold it for a long time, but it will hold it long enough to flop around and hit my leg before I'm out another $200 lol. Fingers Crossed!
