If you own a R18, please read and stop buying products from BMW Motorrad. If you are thinking of buying a R18 or other BMW motorcycles, don’t as you will be disappointed.

I saw the R18B at the Perth’s Motorrad dealership today. It is NICE. It has the exhaust, cruise control, comfort seat and other things I wanted on my R18 first edition. While I admire the elegance of the R18B, I feel betrayed by BMW. I have been waiting patiently for so long, hoping the shortage of accessories would end soon. My expectation is to see BMW offering these accessories to the first loyal takers like me (I also own the RNineT Racer), instead BMW builds new models with these accessories without offering these to the first edition owner.

When I asked about trading in the R18 classic for a R18B, the dealer demanded a ridiculously high price for the “upgrade”. I felt he was mocking me being foolish enough to buy the first model like installing MsWindows x.0 on a brand new computer.

To BMW management, I hope you read this. Don’t you think that you have failed the first edition takers miserably? You promised the bike will offer plenty of accessories for personalisation. Your configurator on BMW website is only a marketing lie, a click bait. We saw the good work you have done with the R18 prototype and put our faith on your product. But at the end, we are left with discontentment, disappointment and betrayal. — feeling angry.

Totally agree with the last paragraph. They sold the idea of “highly customizable“ and is not, because there aren’t accessories. Customization is not “build by yourself”

It depends on your definition of "Customizable"
Having bought my first "motorcycle" as opposed to a scooter, 1962 HD PanHead, at the police auction, no after market or manufacturer custom parts whatsoever available.
Custom fabrication of everything was required.
"Waynes Choppers
405 SOUTHWEST BOULEVARD, Kansas City, MO 64108
"
Purchased the R18 with the same intention.
Customizing in my eyes is not bolting 14 inch store bought curb feelers to the fenders, with dangly lights and bicycle whips on the handle bars.
Fabricating custom parts is indeed easy for the R18 because it was indeed designed to do so.
There does appear to be some "scammers" out there who are willingly taking your money then giving a multitude of excuses, if they even answer you, why they have not yet delivered your over priced parts.
There are a couple on this very web sight.

I have had Engine Protection Bars on order since I purchased the R18 FE
Took 2 weeks to get the seat from Corbin, reputable supplier. Ordered it Dec 27, 2020, received it Jan 17, 2021.
Seems to be a lot to unknown "store front" venders hawking parts for the R18 with what I have seen so far, shoddy follow thru.
At least one very obvious one on this web sight.
You be the judge.

I understand your point BlackDog, but my definition is not relevant, the thing is: BMW said, (with no gun pointing their head) that we will be able to combine too many accessories from BMW store. And all the official photos and videos were with “those accessories from their store” and always saying Customizable. Now a day there is no handlebars to chose, no bobber kit, no handlebar risers, and a long “etceteras”. That’s my point.

Caveat Emptor
Is my point.
I was never dependent upon store bought mass produced parts and in almost 60 years of riding have never bought a motorcycle
depending on store bought mass produced "custom" parts.

But then a pandemic and unforeseeable and unprecedented supply limitations and for cripes sake, Holan can't even SEND an item from Poland to New Zealand. As you well-know, things the whole world over went totally pear-shaped! EVERY company which manufactures anything or, even worse, which subcontracts with other manufacturers (look at the Ford Bronco and it's current roof issues) is having huge problems getting parts. It's not just BMW. And, one last thought, if I were looking at available and unavailable resources from within a company like BMW, I'd be remiss to prioritize items for a brand new product line with painfully anemic sales.

So yeah, it sucks. We all want stuff for our R18s. I bought a $439 fastback saddle because I couldn't tolerate the stock seat and the weekender wasn't out yet. I got tired of waiting. Ordered the weekender today but now I'm saddled with an extra saddle, sorry🤣 Anyhow, we're in crazy times, Luis. It's disappointing, yes, but there's not much you or I can do other than to be patient.

/fastback saddle hopefully offered for sale here in a few weeks. $350 shipped within continental USA.

I saw that too. I’ve been very vocal as well…whenever I’ve had opportunity, and have also been “hit” in this forum for “whining” about it, thinking it’s a “conspiracy”, not grasping that it’s a global issue of lack of supplies, that all the things promised were “baubles” poor poor BMW. But the writer has it right and expressed it perfectly. I love my R18 but I’ve lost all respect for those lying SOBs that promised much and didn’t deliver anything but more new models with the promised items already installed but still unavailable to us…not even a shop manual…unless you’re a dealer.

This is pretty much why I don't do Facebook.

Hi Feeling Angry,

Grow up anonymous Facebook dude! Multinational corporations don't owe you anything. Being an early adaptor doesn't somehow place you at the front of the line for accessories. Dealerships aren't obliged to cut you what you think is a fair deal. And for the love of all things holy, corporations can't betray you! How insanely narcissistic! They exist to make money and increase market share. If you bought something and then felt that they produced a more suitable product later on, that's on you. BMW would LOVE to sell you more stuff but, for reasons that are way out of their control, there's been a delay with pretty much everything. Them's the breaks! Now please, calm your tits and stifle that indignant and entirely misplaced outrage.

Sincerely, anonymous R18forums guy

/GP, speaking from first-hand experience, because I know you feel very strongly about this, it's pretty much impossible to get parts for my Land Rover right now. They're curtailing production and not offering certain, previously available features on new builds because of supply chain issues. People are pissed! But companies can't sell what they don't have. I just know, in my capitalistic heart of hearts, that if BMW could make another nickel off any of us, they would.

So you missed my point? BMW new subsequent models have many of the “things” promised for the R18 FE…plenty available for production but…and how does any of that prevent them from selling DVD shop service manuals, which are already available in digital format in dealerships?

I don't know, man. Plans were in place for years and then the situation changed. I'd guess that prioritizing the items to builds rather than aftermarket sales yields a higher profit and, from a ledger standpoint, they've already made a bundle off of you and me. Can't really fault a company for trying to make a buck. The DVD thing is a sign o' the times. Now a'days a person isn't SUPPOSED to work on his BMW. Or Land Rover, or Toy-freakin-ota. Even companies with a home garage mechanic history like Porsche are moving away from it. Wrenching diminished dealership profit and may lead to warranty problems and just be happy that you're still allowed to fill the tires with air, I guess. I don't agree with it either. Eventually, whether BMW releases something or not, there'll be enough YouTube videos from Estonia and the like to cover pretty much all the maintenance you can imagine.

/Had the distinct pleasure recently of teaching my 17 year old daughter how to change the oil in her Chevy Cruze hatchback.

Fair enough. Then BMW should be honest with us and say just what you said, if that is the case. I will get by and continue on paths already taken. I am resourceful enough without them. Their non-performance in “doing what they promised” is ONLY important to me because I believed them and handed over my money based on that. I definitely would not have bought the bike had I known. They cheated this customer and every other customer who relied on those promises and spent their money. I thought they were better than this...I am thoroughly disappointed with the brand.

Hello ,
1999:
Bought a RoadKing with the 1 year Magneti Marelli EFI(HD went to Delfi in 2000).Costly Dyno tuning after the 1st Powercommander which didn't do well till the PC III came out. Also the first year for the Twin Cam(not a fan but, had 3 of them).Costly to get low end tq untill I sprung for a CVO 110 in 2011.HD finally made a TC that had TQ.(LOTS OF $$$$ spent during these years).

In the interim I purchased a 2003 Indian Vintage, the Factory in Gilroy closed the next day. BUMMED! With no dealer support I sold the Indian to a guy that loved the LOOK.Black & Tan...Pretty but blown head gaskets & electrical issues.Costly $$$$ too.
I had kinda had it with the Motor Co so I traded in my 2011 CVO for a 2014 Indian Chieftain.I expierenced almost all the accessories issues voiced in the Facefukc post with the 1st year numbered (#458) bike. Then they came out with a Roadmaster.Really bummed!
Lastly,One of the Doc's I worked with at the Hospital purchased a Victory dealership & acquired Indian too.I helped him with the shop after retiring so I bought all the RM parts for my Chieftain.Very costly even with getting the parts at cost.(maybe would have been cheaper to just buy a RM)Anyway,I traded the Chieftain(90,000 miles) in on a 2017 Limited & switched all the RM parts to my Limited(both bikes Thunder Black).Still have the 17 Roadmasterized Limited.Wonderful bike. The best bike I have ever owned (46,000miles).Only issue was a kickstand switch recall.

To present day:
I bought the R18C to install a sidecar since it has reverse.I think the R18 is a marvel & I really like the look, power/tq.I am suprised everytime I ride it.Plus the difference & comparing it to anything out there.1 hell of a machine.Really love it.
It is kinda like having a sports car compared to the Indian.Although I think it can be a tourer too.I plan to ride till I am in diapers and beyond so this one is a keeper too.Kinda mixed about the sidecar but it will be installed in November.

Sorry for all the anger & disappointment verbalized. It sucks,I know.I lost a ton of money over the years on purchases and mods.I am thankful that these R18s can be proudly ridden in their stock OEM form.I did have to get a better seat for my old arus.LOL!
Hopefully aftermarket will catch up for the folks that want to build their personal machine to their liking.
Until then,we will have to settle for BMW Motorad to make em.

Which Indian? There have been so many different companies with that name. Indian actually died in 1953.
Then it became the S&S Harley motor in a different frame but died again.
Then Victory changed its name to Indian.
It is like me claiming to be over 130 years old because I have the same name as my grandfather.

Stop making so much sense! Am tired of it!! heheheh

Got notice from A&S Cycle that my BMW protection bars are in the mail. Happy to know a shipping label is printed with a Sept 7 arrival. Guess we're all suffering from a clash of supply chain and patience.

We know we are in BIG trouble when we look to Facebook for affirmation. Just sayin.
I don't have a Facefukc account so,I probably am missing something.Funny just like I miss the blocked comments here,LOL!
