R18 - Aftermarket ECU options

Thanks. Definitely looks like there’s a muffler in there (certainly looked like straight pipes from the side). I imagine the db killer is similar to what is in mine (very easy to remove) but really really loud when out (in a good way).

I received my Hattech Sidepipes (with the “works” finish) on Sunday, and we bolted them on right away. They took a long while to receive, but the wait was more than worth it. I’m traveling but will try to post pictures and a video with sound later this week. My observations so far are:
1. They are beautifully made and look amazing on the bike (I know that is in the eye of the beholder and some on this forum have already been negative).
2. They are slightly louder, but not obnoxious. Nothing like a Harley window-breaker.
3. A more “mellow” sound than stock.
4. The bike seems to run very well without a tune. The seat of my pants says more torque at low RPM.
5. Removing the stock exhaust exposes some of the R18’s best features.
I still think that this change requires a tune. I have been in touch with Bren and I expect that I will be shipping it to them very soon. I have used Bren with several bikes before, and my dealer never cared one bit. In fact, before the handheld tuner development, the dealer removed the ECU on one of my bikes, sent it to Bren and then reinstalled it for me. They were thrilled with the way it turned out and never gave me any grief about it.
This setup means that my R18 will look really awesome with a set of those BMW Ape Hangers. Oh right … more vaporware from BMW. They have also dropped the price of the One Edition to the point where they are selling them new for $13,500. Shame on BMW for treating loyal customers and early adopters this way.
Lastly, this means that I have a pile of stock BMW exhaust parts that I will never re-use. Some on this forum have been looking for a set to customize. I’m not going to give the parts away, but I will sell them if anyone wants to make any sort of reasonable offer. They are heavy and will cost a good bit to pack and ship, I suspect.
More to follow …
I really like the hattech design but I really think they overcharge by a great amount only because they are one of the only on the market that offer R18 full exhaust.

Did the new exhaust affect in any way lean angle? I suppose that hanging that low would maybe make it scrap before footpegs?

Also thank you for the Brentuning! I am really looking forward for that R18 tune so I can also do a full exhaust, intake, remove flappers and remove all eco crap they put on there.

Here are the before and after dyno results from Brenn Tuning (with the Hattech pipe). Big gains throughout, but massive at low RPM. Hit em up. I'm a big fan of both products.

Wow amazing!

can you please tell us more about what is the process, price, and feeling after remap?

Thanks!

My R18 is still in Massachusetts waiting to be shipped back to me. So I can't say how it's going to ride in real life. Also, because I supplied a donor motorcycle (and shipped it back and forth), I did not have to pay for the tune itself. Now that it is done, Bren can sell you a handheld tuner and you can flash this tune onto your bike in your own garage. I have had several motorcycles with Bren tunes, and I can tell you that this is a very simple process (and can be undone just as easily). If you go to their website you can see what this costs for other motorcycles. I assume that the cost will be similar for this.

Nice,ET!

Looking for further thoughts on this Bren tune hand held device before I drop the coin on it. Worth it? How does one use it (please don’t scoff).?

I did contact them. The current stage 1 is a stock or a simple slip on change. They said not to remove the O2 sensors; so clearly no cat or extensive changes are possible with what they currently offer. New maps after this will be 150-250 additional. Roughly the cost of a dyno job.

I like the fact that the O2 wideband sensors are operational with the tuner.I believe the cats are behind the wide band O2 sensors.Which should not be a issue. My other bikes are tuned with the O2 sensors on(no cats) and I can clear codes.
I agree, not a fan of the price.Plus the cost of the GS-911 to remove codes.
The best thing this tuner does is it gets rid of that 3000 rpmTQ dip. This would be a noticeable difference. The throttle response and idle is improved would be worth looking into.
Myself,If I get the tuner,I will leave the cats.I will go to the DNA hiflow air filter and run the stock exhaust for now.Maybe do mufflers later.

I do recommend saving the entire stock oem exhaust & cats, pricey.Over $3000 for a pair of R18 or R18C mufflers.

Hello! We just made our profile here and wanted to make ourselves available to anyone for questions regarding our new R18 flash.

To clear a few things up:

- NO, our flash is not just for slip on exhaust. Any modification for exhaust is fine as the bike is set into a FTCL (full-time closed loop) and will tune itself for any new exhaust system. This is part of our Stage 1 flash. The person that said the flash was for slip-on exhaust only is incorrect and we spoke with them about it. Sorry for the confusion there.

-YES, we offer military discounts. Active military or vets are welcome with photo copy of your valid military id or a DD214

Thank you for your interest!

At the bottom is the emailI got. I must have mis interpreted your response that you "don't have full exhaust worked out".

Removing the cat will likely cause the temp sensor that follows the cat to be way way off any kind of spec. Does your flash compensate for that?

Just call me confused at this point. But that problem seems to be getting easier every year.

Thanks for all you do I am interested if I can remove the cat.

Email:
"Hi Ken,

Changing slip ons is fine. Doesn't really affect the mapping. I don't have full exhaust stuff worked out yet as the bike we just developed on was stock.

Do not remove the o2 sensors from the bike, you'll just make it run worse and be slower."

Yes, our flash compensates just fine. On the product page you can see the bike on the dyno has a full system. We also tested another one with a completely stock system to ensure no negative variance was detected. This full time closed loop technology was released on the K67 S1000RR and it's pretty amazing. Been using it for a couple years like this now.

The O2 sensors are REQUIRED for tuning as that's how the bike will adjust it's own AFR (air/fuel ratio). If you get any aftermarket system, just make sure the stock sensors go back into the new exhaust.
