I won't go on the defensive such that I should go into a list of my dissertations and accomplishments in the automotive, motorcycling, aeronautics, nuclear mechanics or physical science history. I am somewhat published on the web and known in the motorcycle and physics industries, by anyone who cares will find me on the web.
Getting back to the topic at hand, I still say that anyone who cares about cost/competence/other personal issues regarding the maintenance and/or repairs of their R18 (or any other vehicle) should do a bit of research and make their own informed decisions.

Apparently we're not the only ones that scratch our heads over BMW's gear oil specifications.

70W-80 Hypoid Axle G3

Hello All. Has anyone found an alternative for the BMW 70W-80 Hypoid Axle G3 fluid? (P/N: 83 22 2 413 512) I see that it is a GL5 fluid and Redline makes final drive fluid within this range. At $60 for 500 ml seems kind of steep.

For all practical purposes, the R18 is much like most cars made today. The engine, clutch, transmission and final drive are ALL separate systems. The engine, transmission and final drive still have specific requirements for lubrication type and viscosity. The DRY CLUTCH should NEVER see any form of lubrication whatsoever.
I have no ax to grind here. I only suggest that owners pay attention to the specifications in the owner's manual, while knowing that the oil does not have to meet wet clutch requirements.

Clearly the R18 is NOT a wet clutch design so, as you stated, there is no need for motorcycle specific oil!
 
I have a very expensive bottle of 10W40 from a previous bike. I know the manual says 15W50. I ride in 75 degree weather all summer. How much of a sin would it to be to use this oil in the R18?
 
It may not do any harm but the real question is (for this an any other situations) how expensive would it be to repair damaged components/engine because using the wrong fluids?
 
It seems to me that with a dry clutch, 15W-50 of any of the motor oils at Walmart would be good enough.
I haven't changed oil in my R18 yet, but Mobil1 15W-50 has been the oil I have used in all my Beemers (3 since 2008).
 
I've used Mobil 1 Synthetic 15W-50 without any concerns; I'm pretty good about getting the miles on the bike each year, and changing the engine oil and filter annually.

I've recently purchased Mobile 1 15W-50 (5 qrts.) or 4+ L. for about $25 and Amazon delivered it within the same day..
 
you can use any synthetic oil in the recommended weight. I just posted an UOA of 15w50 motul car competition which porsche airheads rave about. Results were fine for our engine.
