Received the recall this week. No remedy Available. The problem is the reverse control unit seal could leak and allow moisture to enter the unit causing corrosion, loss of function and fire. The temporary fix is to disconnect the control unit from the motorcycle electrical system. The final remedy is currently under development.

So let me tell you my experience. If anyone else is in south Florida this is for you… I own a repair shop myself. However when it comes to warranty or recalls I have no choice. In this reverse issue I tried to work out a time with my local dealer ( motorcycles of Miami ) which to be honest is the most difficult dealer to work with. The service is horrible.. they never answer and just leave you hanging with questions. Any thing you need take a day minimum.. so this reverse issue is said to take about an hour but the dealer wants it for the day. On top of that no appointment is available till Jan 10th.. I was really excited about the 1k money to finally buy all my RSD stuff. Now a little background is that I had my reverse unit already replaced… and the new one is great. As I understand it could still be part of the bad batch. When the time comes I will do the recall maybe at another dealer which would be preferred. For the 1k I really don’t feel like having another bad experience with them and have no reverse for god knows how long. I need my reverse to get it out the spot in my trailer. So basically I would have a dead machine too. All for 1k and no time frame. I got a 25% discount instead and my shop has been doing exceptional lately so I’m just going to bite it and buy my well deserved RSD parts. Sorry guys I had to vent… maybe if the dealers had better customer service bmw would sell more.. I’m not the only one complaining. Check the reviews.

We are all in the same boat i,m afraid over here in the UK most owners are having the same problem , i had my unit disconnected no report on when and how this will be solved , BMW over here seem to have lost the customer service that they used to have , only good thing for me is that it will probably be my last bike anyway , but it still brings that smile to my face !!!!!

I took both bikes in for the $1,000.compensation credit, collected on some accessories that I had my eyes on for a while... got home from the service appointment and spent an hour or two with each bike and reconnected the removed DC cables... Restored the REVERSE function

One of my bikes has NEVER seen rain, and the other has experienced rain - maybe twice, and was hand cleaned shortly afterwards...

It seems that the Reverse module is prone to failure in extreme wet weather conditions, where is develops corrosion over time - which is the root of the electrical overstress condition and heating or fire condition...

Keep in mind, the heating or electrical overstress condition can only occur when the Reverse function is actually engaged and being used or under load... It's not like your bike is going to spontaneously combust when not supervised...

Me personally.. the $1,000 credit is a good deal, it allowed me to pick up some items that I would not have normally purchased due to the high prices.... 🤓

Thats another strange report how do you reconnect the cables ? on my letter it clearly stated the reverse module cables removed must not be given to the customer !!!!!

You can either fabricate your own cables, or go to an auto parts store and purchase a battery cable kit and modify it ...

Perhaps, an electrical supply house can provide a DC cable with connectors crimped on it for you..

There's a bunch of details posted in the various threads around the Reverse Recall..

I was informed that they also had to do some ECU flash to tell the bike the reverse module is "no longer there" and not throw any fault codes. But if you restored the reverse function, I guess not? Or maybe they didn't bother at the shop you took it to? I'm curious.

Definitely would like the fix sooner than later as these skinny knees do no better in the Mid-Atlantic winter than they do in warmer seasons.

In my case.. no software modifications, both bikes have Reverse functionality...

Apologies if this has been mentioned already in this thread, I read about half of the pages.

I took my MY23 R 18 Classic to my local dealer in Melbourne, Australia this afternoon. They are offering either $1800AUD ($1200USD) of genuine BMW accessories, or their 3 year/30,000 km service package, which is worth about the same amount of money. The Mechanic told me that BMW expect replacement parts will be available 'Q4 2024', or before Christmas this year. Allegedly.

Link to the Australian recall notice, which contains all of the VINs affected: https://www.vehiclerecalls.gov.au/recalls/rec-006092
The recall of my bike happened 09 December 2024. I took the 3 year/30000 km service package. No one knows when the reverser will be restored.

Well if they are all like my local dealership god help us all , no word at all about the solution yet , also my emergency key did not work took that it in three weeks later i returned , the parts dept stated know nothing about this , goes back to the person who dealt with it and she stated "oh they must of overlooked my message "so had to order it again , needless to say when this is all resolved i will start going to an independent i think main dealerships are all focused on moving new bikes .

Can any UK owners with a reverse recall letter post a copy of their letter? I am trying to establish exactly when BMW UK notified owners as I have not received anything. If you’d prefer not to publish a copy then could you at least let me know the date on it?

I never received a letter. Was informed by Halliwell Jones when I took the bike in with regards to other warranty work.

Similarly received the square root of bugger all from The Mother Ship in the UK.
However the reverser on my B has been disconnected by my local dealer and I’ve claimed my ‘compensation’ accessory.

Gents , I have a copy of the official letter , i will put it on the forum sometime today , but i can tell you that my dealership letter was dated March 2024 .
I have not received any letters yet but I am cool about it. I rather to keep the reverse gear if I can.
When the bike is due for service sometime in June, they may disable it if there is not a fix in place. I will then buy the cable BigJimSlim posted and re enable the thing. I rarely use it but I rather have it and not needed it than need it and not having it 😁

might need to tap on you for a tutorial. Searched and found your pics but nothing substantial enough for me to tackle the gig. I likely need a little more of a walkthrough for my B if you're willing (or a link to something I may have missed.) I appreciate it!
