Hornig engine crash bars

So, mine was delivered today in Sydney, Australia after exactly a week of ordering this. Installed pretty much straightaway. The color shade is not exactly the same as that of the motorcycle but no complaints given the overall build and quality.

Fitted these 38mm diameter Road Craft versions to my bike the other day. Took around 20 mins and no complaints. Haven’t yet fitted the rubber foot mounts. Not sure if I will.

So I recently received these bars from Hornig. Maybe I'm being too picky but the attached two pictures were areas on the bars where they hang as part of the powder coating process which I thought the manufacturer should have address before shipping. The bars themselves seem to be of good quality. I'm getting some touchup paint to cover up those areas but realistically you probably wouldn't see these areas when the bars are mounted. The bars are branded Craftride, the same as the ones on Motea https://www.motea.com/en/engine-gua...-crash-bar-38mm-craftride-mv5-black-a130021-0 . Hornig did a great job shipping them out right away from Germany to my location in the US and I received them in about 5 days including the weekend.

The hardware that comes with these bars have hex heads. I wanted Torx heads to match the rest of the bike so I ordered the some of the screws that come with the OEM engine bars that you can see here under Accessories https://shop.maxbmw.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=61577&rnd=09082020 . The Hornig/Craftride bars use the screws M10x25, 10.9 on the lower sections near the bottom of the frame and the BMW ones are M30x30 10.9. Because these bars are thicker than the OEM ones the other two screws mounted near the top are larger too, M10x40 10.9 and M10x55 10.9 but the dealer wasn't able to locate any. If anyone know of someone who sells M10x40 10.9 and M10x55 10.9 screws with Torx heads please let me know.

BTW. If anyone is looking for touchup paint for our bikes in Black Storm Metallic no dealers I tried could get it. The one place I found to order it is here www.touchupdirect.com . It's not cheap and hopefully worth it.

I like your thoughts on the Torx head screws for that totally authentic look. I went with CraftRide 38 mm bars. Happy with the look and quality.

Thanks. I was having trouble locating a BMW M10X40 10.9 Torx and I found one, https://parts.maxbmw.com/p/BMW__/Fillister-head-screw/78914842/46539909561.html , and ordered it today. I couldn't locate a Torx head substitute for the main M10X55 bolt that holds the two halves of the bars together so I'm leaving that as is. I played around with getting a bolt with a dark finish for it to blend in but it was getting to be silly money so I'll live with it. I should get all of the pieces sometime next week.

I ordered the bars yesterday. Supposedly they come with removable rubber footrests. It shows on their website. Regarding shipping costs of Motea, I think they are ridiculous! If you order from Motea through ebay it's about half the cost.

I have not fitted the grips as prefer the cleaner look. If fitting you will need to warm in hot water or low heat on a heat gun as they are a tight fit and not very pliable. Some soap to slip in the pins also.

I was waiting for the Fillister (Torx head) BMW screws to install mine (as I mentioned earlier in this thread) and then I got barraged at work which delayed me. I finally had time last night to install the bars. I’ve got the Classic and there is an extra wire that runs where the brake lines go through the front forks. The First Edition doesn’t seem to have the wire, at least the Hornig video doesn’t show it. I found it was very difficult for me to get the top assembly together with the wire which kept getting in the way. I was able to pull up a bunch of slack from the wire and run it to the right of the assembly. After everything was done I confirmed that there was still enough slack in the wire when the handlebars were at full lock left or right and it seems to be OK.

The second problem I had was that when getting in the screw for the assembly the holes on the bars didn’t seem to line up with the hole for the brake line bracket. I wonder if there was a slight bend in my bars but nothing was visible except the bars needed to move up closer to the brake bracket hole. I ended up removing the bolt near the bottom left of the engine so I could push the top of the bars closer to the assembly, get the bolt started and then I had to use some force to align the left engine bracket hole (not too much). After that everything went together well. I included pictures of the assembly in case someone has the same issue.

My impressions are that the bars go very well with the Classic. They look OEM and using Fillister head screws instead of the supplied screws complete the look for me. They seem extremely sturdy. I’m 5’ 9” and I didn’t check to see if I’d be able to stretch my legs out on them. I didn’t install the rubber foot brackets yet but I might. Don’t be fooled by the picture from the rider’s view. The bars do extend past the cylinder heads just enough to do the job.

Hornig crashbars and sissy bar from Motea.
How do you like the sissy bar? How was the install? It looks good. I like that it’s black like the engine bars. My significant other wanted a sissy bar and I was thinking of adding one but the BMW offerings don’t exist. I haven’t looked into other brands yet.

I also noticed you got the quick release sissy bar model. I like that since I don’t think my cover is big enough for the sissy bar and I’d probably take it off when my significant other isn’t riding with me. Did you think it’s good quality and now that you have one would you buy the quick release model again?

The comment about the black not being a good match with the BMW black is troubling for me.
I actually think the black is a good match but it isn’t an exact match. The black on the bars is a flat black finish and the frame color is more glossy. I really don’t notice the difference. The frame is in the left and the bars are on the right.

I kind of am leaning towards the 38mm diameter Road Craft versions posted above by Cheshire Cat.

It’s the same bars. CraftRide is the name of the manufacturer for his bars and mine. He wrote Road Craft in his first post but then CraftRide later. Hornig is a reseller. My bars had the CraftRide stickers on them. I found shipping by Hornig was less expensive than Motea but Motea is running a sale now so you should look at both sites.
