What did you do to your R18 today?

Indeed it was a long wait, I am still waiting on a black locking gas cap, ordered the day I bought my bike... dang !!
If you have a locking one on your bike you could order the non locking black and just swap caps.

I have been riding or driving for over 50 years. Never once has anyone unauthorized ever opened my gas cap. In fact I find it annoying to have to unlock them. Blessed I am.

Agreed. Mine came with the locking cap, but I never lock it. With the keyless ignition, the keys stay in a pocket, so easier not to have to get them out at a fuel stop.

Damn!!!!!!!!! That is one buncho illumination. Awesome. I love lights and the safety they provide.

Fir a ref point I found the darlas are good/ok for conspicuity. Helpful but don’t provide much for the driving experience.

Those outer LED’s yeowza. How many total lumins we talking here? I have tried Baja squadron pro lights (5000 lumins each) in my rRunner and they were too much to have on in the daytime even. And on the 701 I could not have anyone within 1/2 mile in front of me. Went back to squadron sports and was happier.

Not sure if any of this helps .

These are lumens PER light:

I have two Squadron Pros on my Husky 701 and they throw a lot of light but they throw it everywhere. I keep one off and the other dimmed unless I'm off-road at night then I put both on. I'd blind people if I ran my 2 Squadrons at 100% full time.

We've gotten pretty comfortable with various lights and the differences.

  1. F750GS = two Denali D7s + two Denali D2s
  2. R1200GS = two Darla + one Erica + one Sevina
  3. 701 = two Squadron Pros
  4. R18 = two Dixi lights with Darla at 25% (middle lights) full time then the whole array will go 100% when I pull the high beam button.

Shout out to Ruby Moto though - https://www.rubymoto.com I was talking to them as I wanted to try them out on the R18 but HexCode's EZCan (which is who Ruby uses for BMW integration) doesn't support the R18 yet and they couldn't give me an ETA so Ruby was just going to send me a traditional on-off switch so I waited for a couple of months and then decided to go Clearwater.

I don't have buyer's remorse but I do think the Super Sevina would have been the better buy. Clearwater has this handy page that shows you how the lights look. Dixi is a super long throw but not a wide one. Hoping I don't miss a deer standing right on the side of the road with these.

Here's the try-out page (probably requires being on a computer, not a phone) - https://www.clearwaterlights.com/pages/virtual_clearwater_lights_simulator

FYI to others on alternator output:

R18 Pure/Classic Output: 600 watts
R18 Bagger/TC: 660 watts

Your'e using 350 of that minimal for all of the vehicle's doo-dads so while I think pulling 200 watts for the Dixi along with running heated grips, seat and charging two USB Power Packs in the trunk's powerlet plug will work, I honestly don't know. I'll keep a look at the volts on the R18's dash to make sure I don't get down below 13. 200 watts just in lights is probably the limit of accessories. Canbus will shut the show down and reset if it is though.

Nice stuff, thanks.

I have added two lid-locs and one waterproof quad lock in the past 90 days. I'm coming off riding my GS Adventure with 90 Liters of storage in my side cases plus 72 liters in the top case. Additionally, I loved riding with my phone accessible while riding. With these two additions, I have a visible place for my helmets and phone.

I have not seen it mentioned much, but the integrated GPS often drops the map to be dependable.

Here is the link to lidlox

My half helmet actually fits within my R 18 B's left side case, if I turn it just right... (For some reason, the right side case seems smaller, or perhaps the speaker interferes...

I've used the case locking lever to secure my full face helmet; where I slip the strap underneath the locking lever and then lock the bike & cases. Not totally secure, but definitely slows anyone down who thinks it's an easy score...

Can't sell a helmet with a cut strap..

Roland sands black exhaust tips, kuryakyn audio, front crash bars and driver leg rests!!!! All within a 2 well span.... Beautiful pieces all and my baby is complete!

Left the house at 2PM yesterday. Made it to Caribou Maine by 9PM, 11AM and well it’s 10AM EST I’m in a new time zone and I’m almost to the Acadia Penninsula of New Brunswick. ABout 700 miles in the last 24 hours.

Should have gotten up earlier and made it an iron butt:

Leg Rest Test Ride: That Bagger/Transcontinental is looking good... I went out for six hours today, buddy of mine is trying to get 1k miles on his new HD in order to get it serviced before taking it down South for a September trip.

Leg Rest: I'm probably going to sell the Leg Rest if anyone is interested; I tried using them today, and it wasn't happening... I'm so use to riding my GSA for years; the floor boards on the R18 B are more than comfortable enough for me. I'll take some pictures and post something later this week.

Made it home safely. Here are some favorites of the bike off the big camera:

From 3PM Friday until 4PM Sunday, I did 1500 miles from New Hampshire, Maine, New Brunswick then Quebec and finally home via Vermont. LOTS of riding. The R18 handled It flawlessly.

Here's some fuel economy. Folks in Canada will hold around 80 MPH constantly so with that, my fuel economy shot way down to 37 that day.

Made up a grill for the oil cooler. It’s fine aluminium mesh (the type that body shops use), used some cardboard to cut a template of the exact size, transferred that to the mesh and sprayed it black then popped it on. The mesh is very soft and malleable so mounds to the cooler like a hand in glove. Very pleased. Should help keep small stones and hard insects from bending the fins.

I used hair spray on the grips and Grip Puppies. I can't recall where I learned that hack but it works on grips and luckily it work on the Grip Puppies.
I did the same, not that brand though but these guys (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00230P2E4)
Numb hands may not completely be avoided but you can tell much more comfort, need to try them in a long trip. Note: Using the hair spray to fit them was a must
to me.
